Title: [Politics/Religion] Dude! One of the most brilliant suggestions...

...that I've heard in the past 2 months is made by Ashton Kutcher:

"You know who should bail them (Big 3 autos) out? It's the oil companies."

*goshdarn* brilliant!

Kutcher plays a great stoner in the movies, but he's a pretty sharp guy. This episode of Real Time left me impressed.

BTW, according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashton_kutcher), he has something in common with Aske:

Quote
Kutcher attended the University of Iowa, where he majored in biochemical engineering...

Pretty sure that 'Biochemical Engineering' in Iowa consists of making sure that the bovine and porcine effluvia  do not mix.

Why would the oil companies bail out the Big 3? With our without them we'll still be driving.

But not necessarily vehicles that use oil-based fuels. The oil companies want to maintain the status quo as long as possible, and as long as the Big 3 remain viable concerns, they'll do just that.

The Big Three are certainly 'Fat, Dumb And Lazy', but even I'm not buying that it's some massive conspiracy between them and Big Oil.

I won't pretend to know much about the auto industry. But I'd like to believe that with the proper leadership in the White House, and a properly motivated public, it's not too late for us to take a leading role in the development and promotion of green(er) vehicles both here and abroad. If so, then our auto industry can't be allowed to die. It would be like waving the white flag of surrender.

Detroit bailout = leverage that forces them to make changes that save their asses over the long haul (e.g. a green fleet)

win/win

otherwise, yeah, let the oil companies buy them out, and roll fleet MPG standards back to the single digits
