Title: Upside Down
Post by: Uisce Beatha on May 15, 2007, 01:05:08 PM
Almost.

Shot 46.  Hit 22 putts.  [sm_anon]

Can anyone claim this dubious honor?

Sorry.   :(

Upside Down = More than half the strokes are putts.

(not an official term or even one I've heard before - just came close to doing it today)

"Inside the leather"

Common usage = putts conceded when closer to the hole than the length of the putter grip (which, in olden tymes, was made of leather).

Less common usage = TFT on a weekend night.

I normally don't, but....what the hell.

Counselor, while the second is dead on, I disagree with the explanation on the first.

After a putt nears the hole, but does not drop;  A putter would be laid down, the shaft, in the direction of the ball.  The blade of the putter was dropped in the hole, and the club pulled taught.  As long as the ball was closer to the hole than the start point of the grip, it would be deemed to be inside the leather.  Typically around 2 feet.

I concur. At least stroh's description is how I've always heard "inside the leather" applied. While the original usage may be different, in practice this is what I've observed.

Oh yeah. And I'd wager the less common usage is more common than we'd like to imagine.  :P

Now that I think about this.  Either my math is *fudge*ed up, or you played pretty damn well tee to green.  Going back to the "Short Game Stupid" thread.......I would think you would have had to have hit a lot of fairways, and greens, and then just putted like *feces*  to get  22/46.  To putt more than twice on each, and maintain that score, you must first be on them.

I think I would be happy to pull that off.  Again, unless I'm missing something, If I could say I shot a 46, and 22 of them were putts, I was striking the ball pretty well.

To answer the OP.  No.  Hasn't happened yet.  I have not struck the ball that well.

Title: Re: Upside Down
Post by: Uisce Beatha on May 15, 2007, 06:44:29 PM
stroh, I did strike the ball well.  I hit 6 of 7 fairways and was long down the middle of five of them.  Best day off the tee ever.

Hit five GIR.

I even felt I putted well believe it or not.  All but one of my putts was essentially what I was trying to do.  This course has fantastic greens and they're usually quite fast.  They looked fast today but they weren't.  I left everything short... a lot short.  Then missed the 4-6 footer.  Five two putts and four three putts.   [sm_disgust]

That's the problem with good GIR days.  Usually leaves you a lot of long putts.  At least when you're a mid-teen 'capper it does.

I've always understood inside the leather to be what Clive described.

I had to reply to this thread.

It almost happened...I shot a 90 with 40 putts. Five 3 putts and one 4 putt, I've never had 40 putts for 18 holes or 4 putted in my life (that I can recall).  [sm_disgust]

I retired the 47 inch putter the next day.  [sm_devil]

I had a five putt a few weeks ago.  Funny thing was I didn't even have a three putt on the other 17 holes and I think 3-4 one putts.

Title: Re: Upside Down
Post by: MFAWG on June 05, 2007, 06:53:06 AM
I 4 putted from 3 feet last year.

The 4th green at Maplewood has a little slope to it, and if you're above the hole when the pin's inthe right rear, bad things can happen.... ::)

Title: Re: Upside Down
Post by: Seamus on June 05, 2007, 07:41:13 AM
The back 9 at North Shore has maybe 5 holes like that, a lil' (3 of them have a lot) of tilt, it's a known factor, you try to stay below the holes.  The things is, it seems more so lately, the pins themselves are placed in a sloped area, which is brutal, and I've been noticing it on other courses too, it's almost like the greens keepers are out to get us, that's it, it's a conspiracy it's not my putting a'tall!  ;)
