Title: Covers...
Post by: MFAWG on October 31, 2007, 09:52:30 PM
I came up with this while I was rockin' the Siouxsie and The Banshees 'Helter Skelter' in the Obscure thread and I don't think we've done this one:

Cover songs, good, great and otherwise.

I was going to post up Pancho and Lefty, because how great is a song when one of the most prolific writers in popular music history records it as a number one and then keeps it in his set for 25 years or so, but then I came across a song I didn't even realize was a cover:

cCx8qtC7zOU

(Sidebar: That's obviously recorded off of vinyl. Tom Petty says he thinks digital media lacks the warmth that vinyl had, so he records analog to vinyl and then to digital. After hearing that, I'm inclined to agree.)

of course analog audio is better in principle.

One presumes so, but reproduction after the master is done is the issue, isn't it?

you need an infinitely high sampling rate to capture something truthfully (in a conversion from digital to analog)

I'm trying to visualize that with nothing more than a 25 year old knowledge of how analog to digital PCM signals work, and not getting very far.

I'm guessing you can't 'capture' the infinite curve of the soundwave with digital recording directly.

I think Petty was referring to the actual sound of a vinyl record. If you listen to that track, it has a certain depth to it.

and yes, vinyl often sounds 'warmer' because it is both continuous and features a much larger dynamic range.

At some point, the limitations of the human ear and the medium used for playback come into play.

I have no idea what those threshholds are. I do know that to my untrained ear raised on rocknroll radio, LP's and yes, actual 45's, CD's have a certain 'brittle' quality, although it's much better now than 15 or 20 years ago.

WTF are you two arguing about? I thought this was a thread about cover songs.

Allow me to present the greatest cover evar!

We'll put The Hoff in the 'Otherwise' category, although I'm not sure that was any 'worse' than the original...

What was up with the sandperson guy?

Aske and I aren't arguing about anything, I don't think.

Even The Hoff can't top this bizarro piece:

I love Phish covers but can't access you tube at work to provide any.  Not that you guys care or anything. 8)

But to add to the analog digital discussion I'd like to tell of an experience I may have mentioned before about this time I was on LSD.  I had taken way more than I should've and was tripping hard. So I decided I want to listen to a cd from my car.  15 minutes later while staring at the bathroom wall I remebered I was on my way to my car for a cd.  So I stumble to the door, open it and look out thankful it was still dark.  I open my car and grab the first cd I saw which was Phish's Story of a Ghost.

I eventually make it back to the room that had the cd player.  Then get trapped in a circular conversation for awhile not knowing what the *fudge* anyone is talking about and randomly saying stupid *feces*.  I realize I have the cd in my hand and put it in the cd player.  I switch to one of the last tracks which is "Wading in the Velvet Sea".  It comes on and it is 1/4 the normal speed playing pretty much slow motion.  I'm like what the *fudge* is wrong with the cd player.  They say nothing.  I say is this song playing in super duper slow motion to anyone else.  They say no.  All this time I can hear the swooshing wind before the beat hits and the crackle of the record playing it in extra slow time.  I swear that album was recorded on vinyl and transferred to digital because I could hear it in my state at the time.  I'll never forget those 14 or so hours.

I didn't realize RESPECT was a cover, nice job.

I have a confession to make: Hoyt Axton isn't technically covering Snowblind Friend, he actually wrote that and The Pusher and recorded them after Steppenwolf.

I am Teh Suk.

If I'm not mistaken, that footage of The Kingsmen was recorded at the opening of the Lloyd Center ice rink in Portland, Or where Tonya Harding used to skate.

Otis Redding was da man! LOL@Tonya Harding reference. I wonder if she's a Colts fan.

Another extremely prolific writer covering a cover of her own creation. Early versions of this song are a lot less overblown.

I can't seem to find a youtube link for it, but Jerry Jeff Walker's version of Ray Wylie Hubbard's "(Up Against a Wall) Redneck Mother" is among my favorite covers.

Saw JJW a number of years ago at Red Butte Gardens. Sat on the lawn, got drunk, sang along with a bunch of Cowboy-Hippie type songs, almost threw up in a river. Good times.

The funny thing is I was searching for "Over The Rainbow" by a speed metal band. I thought Aske would get a kick out of it, and then I came across the version by Izzy, I first heard him just before his death in 1997 and have loved his voice since.
