Title: Ok ladies and gents place your bets.....
Post by: twoiron on May 16, 2007, 04:54:40 PM
With twoiron jnr about to make an appearance any day now I thought maybe we could have some fun guessing his weight...

Given that I'm 6'4" and mrs twoiron is about 5'9" the hot tip is he's gonna be a biggun. He's also a lively one too.

I'm taking 8 pounds 4

LOL

kilogram = unit of mass
Newton = unit of weight

pound (avoirdupois) = unit of mass
pound-force = unit of weight

Huh?  ???

In a former occupation I dealt in kilos and grams. Since when wasn't a kilo 2.2 pounds?

8 lbs., 9 oz.

Seamus: Tell twoiron to attach the baby to one end of a spring whose spring constant K is known with the other end of the spring fixed.  Pull the baby back in order to stretch the spring parallel to itself and let go, so that the system oscillates.  Measure the period of oscillation; denote this length of time by T.  Then baby mass = (K * T^2)/(4 * pi^2).

a kilogram is a measure of mass.  a pound(force) is a measure of weight (gravitational force acting through a mass)    a kilo is only 2.2 pounds(force) when g (gravitational acceleration) =9.80665m/s^2

ex.  you have a sea level constant rotation earth weight of 160# (this seems to correspond to a mass of about 73 kilograms) .   on the moon your mass is still 73 kilograms.  your weight however, is no longer 160# (g on the moon is not equal to g on earth)

And that's why I convert the baby to energy and then back-calculate.

Tune in next week when I teach you how to estimate a baby's age by cutting it in half and counting the rings.

Tune in next week when I teach you how to estimate a baby's age by cutting it in half and counting the rings.

You can also measure the volume of a baby as follows:

1. Partially fill a large tub with water.
2. Place the tub with water on an electronic scale.
3. Zero out the scale by pressing the "Tare" button.
4. Place the baby in the tub, and hold him down so that he is completely immersed by the water. If any of the water spills out, then you added too much water and you need to start again from step 3. If the water doesn't completely cover the baby, then you need to add more water and start again from step 3.
5. While holding the baby down in the water, take the reading from the scale in grams.
6. The reading in grams equals the baby's volume in cubic centimeters or milliliters.

BTW, you can use this same method for measuring the volume of a driver. Some asshats from Far Hills, New Jersey say so.

Dude, you eat the PLACENTA, not the meconium.  Even Australians know that.

Wow!.. some interesting replies there...LOL

As far as a prize goes.... well I'm not sure yet... maybe personal satisfaction in knowing that your ability to guess the weight of a newborn baby is remarkable, almost Copperfeild like in execution...

Or maybe the winner might receive a sleeve of crappy golf balls... I dunno...

Cheers
