Title: Best options for short (and business time involved) trip to SF
Post by: Aske on February 15, 2010, 10:40:22 AM
will be staying near Moscone Center--- what's a must see/do within walking distance, and of course I'll get a ride out to Golden Gate.

will only be in town ~3 days, Mar 22 (in late) -Mar 25 (out late)

Hmm, within walking distance if you want to do the standard, tourist things you could walk to Union Square, Chinatown, or North Beach.

Just past North Beach is Fisherman's Wharf and ferries to Alcatraz.

If you have an afternoon free, I could pick you up and take you to Napa/Sonoma for winetasting at several wineries.

thanks, that sounds like a promising opportunity perhaps.
might work on the day in or the day out, not sure it will work on the middle 2 days.  will have to check final technical schedule and see what time block are more free than others.

couldn't find much nearby there hotelwise that fits our allowed GSA reimbursements, but yelp+orbitz+tripadvisor all together ID'd one place as being pretty well reviewed.
http://larkspurhotels.com/collection/abri  hopefully it doesn't suck (too bad)

If you get a chance, try Swan's Oyster Depot (http://www.yelp.com/map/swan-oyster-depot-san-francisco#start:moscone%20center) for lunch. The crab louie salad is awesome. It's a little spendy, but not as bad as going to a place on Pier 39 for a whole steamed crab.

If you can get up to North Beach before noon or so, try this place (http://www.yelp.com/map/liguria-bakery-san-francisco#start:moscone%20center) for some amazing focaccia. Get a brick of the pizza focaccia and hang out in Washington Square. The close once they sell out, and they're usually sold out by early afternoon.

I've been meaning to try this place (http://www.yelp.com/map/beard-papas-san-francisco#start:moscone%20center) too. The reviews seem hit or miss though.

You realize when I come up there you only need to tell me where the nearest Rite-Aid is.

Get a cab.

Stride the same fairways that Teddy Roosevelt, Arnold *goshdarn* Palmer and Joe Dimaggio used to. See the Golden Gate Bridge the way god intended, or don't since it will be foggy as *feces* in March.

(I got to see Dimaggio's locker. It's still kept empty with his nameplate on it. Didn't see if Marilyn's undergarments were there, but you KNOW they have been)

Just *goshdarn* do it!

PS: North Beach is good. North Beach is where Michael Weiner was arrested after threatening some folks with a gun.

You're staying EXACTLY in the area I've always stayed when out on SF chautauqua, which usually have involved deliberations and so forth centered around the convention center

It has been a while, but I remember it mostly as an endlessly fascinating neighborhood, within walking distance to just about whatever you need.  Yes, I've played Presido, took a cab.  Too bad you aren't coming a few weeks later when the baseball season would be in full swing.

it's probably too late to take you up on this (and I do appreciate the offer!!!) , but I finally started making my schedule final,  and Tuesday late afternoon might work.   if that doesn't work, maybe just a meet for a quick drink somewhere around my hotel could work.

PM me .

Hmm. I probably won't be especially busy that particular day, but I can't be too far away from home during the week since I pick up my daughter from kindergarten in the afternoon.

How about after kindergarten pickup?  More like 5 or 6ish.  Would you be able to swing by the city?

It would have to be 6:30-7:00 at the earliest unless I bring my daughter with me. LOL I'd have to wait until her mother gets home before I leave.

I'm about to head up to the city.  (it takes me a while to get up there)

It's too bad that this place isn't open on Tuesdays:

Opaque – Dining in the Dark™
http://sf.darkdining.com/
Meals are served by our blind servers in a pitch black dining room.

It seems like a fitting place to meet.  I was hoping to maintain my status as a Western Regional Man of Mystery since I believe only Fuzzy knows what I look like.

gleek, the best way to describe me is "The Most Forgettable Man in the Room."  When you first arrive and give the room a once over you will easily miss me, but when you rescan the room, you will ask yourself, "where did that guy come from?  I didn't see him before".  That will be me. (You may also notice this later, in conversation. Suddenly, you will wonder "when did this guy join in?" Such is my presence. Feel free to re-introduce yourself.  I take no offense.)

Or you could just look for Aske.

Who ended up paying for the first round in the pool room? For some reason I thought they'd add it to our bill for the table. I'll get the first round next time.  ;D

Wasn't me.  I thought it was added to our bill too.  I think I had 2 beers in the pool room and 1 at the bar later.

are you talking about when there was no waitress for ages and I ordered at the bar?  I just paid for them then and there.

I'm not sure which round that was, but I know you paid for one. I was just wondering who paid for the other since I don't remember paying for either one.  ;D

I might be that they did add one round of drinks it to the bill for the table. This will make me feel better because when I paid the bill, I added a tip out of habit. If we paid the waitress in cash for both rounds before I went up to pay for the table, then that cashier got a tip for just taking our money.
