Title: LDS Cinema [Possibly Religion] Post by: dystopia on August 06, 2007, 04:42:49 PM So I was looking up dvds on Amazon and searching for Charly, the 1968 film based on Flowers for Algernon, and stumbled upon a different movie also called Charly (http://www.amazon.com/Charly-Adam-Thomas-Anderegg/dp/B0001CJ8XM/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/102-9903432-7786506?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1186439492&sr=1-2), which appears to be a Mormon movie.
I had no idea there was a whole LDS film genre with titles such as The Singles Ward (http://www.amazon.com/Singles-Ward-DVD-Will-Swenson/dp/B0000AOPLK/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-9903432-7786506?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1186443069&sr=1-1), Mobsters and Mormons (http://www.amazon.com/Mobsters-Mormons-Mark-Decarlo/dp/B000CSNCI2/ref=pd_sim_d_5/102-9903432-7786506?ie=UTF8&qid=1186439492&sr=1-2), The R.M. - Special edition Mormon comedy (http://www.amazon.com/R-M-Special-Mormon-comedy/dp/B0002CVQJU/ref=pd_sim_d_2/102-9903432-7786506?ie=UTF8&qid=1186439492&sr=1-2), Baptists at our Barbecue (http://www.amazon.com/Baptists-at-our-Barbecue/dp/B00091S6RY/ref=pd_sim_d_4/102-9903432-7786506?ie=UTF8&qid=1186439492&sr=1-2). Have any of you Utahns (or anyone else for that matter) seen any of these? These are all low-budget, insider flicks that do very well around here but wouldn't last ten minutes in a gentile's DVD player.
The guys behind Single's Ward apparently are dismayed at path the genre has taken. Should be good though. I remember learning about it in 7th grade (Utah History) from a non-LDS teacher. A bunch of the parents complained but the principal supported him. Title: Re: LDS Cinema [Possibly Religion] Post by: spacey on August 06, 2007, 05:40:23 PM I saw Singles Ward and thought it was sorta funny for the first half and then it degenerated into the exact thing it was spoofing. Saw bits and pieces of a couple others (R.M., Home Teachers, etc), but they're all pretty bad. Poorly scripted, badly acted, etc. I believe The Hale family (for U.B.) is the financial backing for that series. One film that sorta fits in the genre and wasn't 100% terrible was Saints and Soldiers. 2.5 stars for that one.
