Title: Snow Fort
Post by: dystopia on February 25, 2008, 12:24:01 PM
I have fond memories of building snow forts as a kid.  I only remember one year where I was able to build a truly massive fort, though. (much smaller than this one)

NEENAH — Dan Meyer slept in an igloo last week.

The 18-year-old Neenah High School senior has built snow forts in his front yard for about 10 years.

This year, though, city dump trucks heaped snow into his front yard, and he built a snow fort so massive that 20 people can cram inside.

It's so tall it peaks above the first story of his parents' house, and it's so wide that it blocks the front windows.

...
About three years ago, a neighbor decided to help take Meyer's igloo-building to a new level: He persuaded a truck driver to dump a truckload onto the front yard as a surprise.

"I was just amazed by how much one load was," Meyer said. "Then I piled it up and called them for more loads."

This year, he constructed the biggest and baddest snow fort of his career: It's 8 feet high, 14 feet wide and 34 feet long.

That took seven truckloads from the city, most of which came on the same day.

The city gets occasional requests for dumps of snow during dry years, but a request like Meyer's is unheard of, said Jeff Harding, the assistant superintendent of public works.

"We backed up in the front yard and dumped away, just like we would at our dump site," he said. "It's really like, 'My God, what are you doing with all this snow?'"

My snow 'forts' were snow walls just large enough to duck behind while throwing snowballs at others  [sm_devil] ;D

Kinda lame by comparison, but effective in their intended use  ;)

Cool!

My mom and her brother & sister would build a slide in their yard as kids.  It would start in their backyard and wrap around to the side.

The time I spent in the yard, I preferred to build snowmen.  Made a snowpenguin once, too.  Speaking of which, today looks like a good day for it.  It's sunny and the snow is melting a bit.  Snowball fights with Kev and Dad were a lot of fun, too!

Very cool.  Like you Dys, I've got fond memories of childhood snow forts.  Nothing like this one though.

Tomorrow's headline: 14 teens die in tragic igloo failure.

Funny, that was also the first thing that crossed my mind when I read the story.

We had to dig ourselves out of a collapsed snow fort on more than one occasion.
