Title: March Madness Bracket Contest 2008
Post by: dystopia on March 10, 2008, 10:00:33 PM
Hey there, it looks like our March Madness group from last year is reusable this year.  So many of you already have your teams registered.  You'll just need to make your picks when they become available.

Prize: $40 paypal

Yea? Well, I bet I kick your ass this year! I bet I take you all down! Gonzaga all the way baby!

What? What did you say? What do you mean they lost? Aww *fudge*! To who? Who?!? San Diego? What the Chargers? Did that Rivers guy do this? Who the *fudge* heard of San Diego? What did they taint the water or something? Did Gonzaga hire Pat Riley or something?

*fudge*, I suck. Maybe I'll just pick Texas A&M.

I think in your profile you can change your s/n to be whatever you want it to be. IIRC, I changed mine 2 or 3 times through the course of the tournament.

I think you should be able to join with a new account.  I assume the group password is the same as last year since I haven't changed anything. ("golfhos" - you might want to write it down)  Let me know if it doesn't work out.

Hopefully the old instructions work for any other golfhos members that want to participate this year but didn't last time.

How to join:
1) Go to http://golfhos.mayhem.sportsline.com/e
2) login with your sportsline account or create one
3) the password for our golfhos group is "golfhos" (without the quotes)

Well, being that brackets aren't available until March 16, and the first game is roughly around the 20th every year, I'd say around then. :D

Title: Re: March Madness Bracket Contest 2008
Post by: dystopia on March 11, 2008, 10:46:52 PM
Here's the deadline:

Quote
Deadline for submitting your brackets is 11 AM EST on Thursday prior to the start of Round 1 games.

Tiebreaker is the total score of the final game.

Here's how we did the scoring last year:
Scoring
Round   Weight   Bonus
Round 1   1   Add Seed
Round 2   2   Add Seed
Round 3   3   Add Seed
Round 4   5   Add Seed
Round 5   10   Add Seed
Round 6   20   Add Seed
Add Seed - Points equal the seed number of the winning team added to the weight for the given round.

We could try "Multiply Seed" this year to shake things up.

I think we should give it a try this year.  It might keep more people in contention up until the end.

Let's try a new scoring system this time:

Scoring
Round   Weight   Bonus
Round 1   1   Multiply Seed
Round 2   2   Multiply Seed
Round 3   4   Multiply Seed
Round 4   7   Multiply Seed
Round 5   10   Multiply Seed
Round 6   15   Multiply Seed

Multiply Seed - Points equal the seed number of the winning team multiplied by the weight for the given round.
Multiply Seed - The seed of the winning team is multiplied by the correct pick total. Ex. If the 12th Seed Wins and your weight is 2 then 24 points would be credited for the Win.

That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;

so are we officially going with this?  i'm fence sitting a couple of 4/13 5/12 1st round games and this makes a big difference

Not to be outdone, I too will put forth the requisite sukkage.

Same formula as always.  All #1 seeds, and upsets in the 10-12 seed range.  Then which team has the coolest uniforms, with the tiebreakers being which mascot could beat up the opposition.

Weird.  It's showing you in there already under "Teed shoots...he scores!".  If you played last year, Sportsline automatically copied your account from last year, so you shouldn't need to re-register.

Playing for the last shot would have been the way to go. However, the coach *fudge*ed up by not calling a TO to calm the kids down and to set up a play. On that possession they were basically running around like chickens with their heads cut off.

I do understand, but it still doesn't make sense. 1/4 of his bracket is completely hosed, and his 3 remaining Final 4 teams are a #2, #3, and a #4 seed--all high seeds. It's not like he picked Davidson to go all the way.

gleek, im not gonna go ALL the math on his bracket,
but let's look at the elite eight in

Round 1   1   Multiply Seed
Round 2   2   Multiply Seed
Round 3   4   Multiply Seed
Round 4   7   Multiply Seed
Round 5   10   Multiply Seed
Round 6   15   Multiply Seed

he has Gtown as round 6 (champ) so that's 30 points (2*15)
he has Gtown and Stanford as round 5 (champ game) so thats 50 points (5*10)
he has Gtown, Stanford, Wash St into the Final Four so that's 63 points (9*7)
he has Gtown, Stanford, Wash St , Butler, Pitt and Duke into the Elite Eight  88 points (22*4)

so I can see if he gets ALL those right from here on out him picking up another  220+ points

I'm not going to look and do the math on the next round, but I'll assume CBS computers are right
 ;)

I think using the seed# as a multiplicative factor is excessive.

You can pretty much correctly pick a #8 seed to simply make the Final 4 (and subsequently get nothing else correct) and still get as many points as somebody who correctly picks 3 #1 seeds to make the Final 4, picks the winners of the semis, and correctly picks the winner of the tournament.

For example:

GHer #1 correctly picks a #8 seed to make the Final 4 (and get nothing else correct):

7 * 8 = 56
10 * 0 = 0
15 * 0 = 0
Total: 56 pts

GHer #2 correctly picks a  3 #1 seeds to make the Final 4 (and correctly picks the 2 semis and finals winner):

7 * 1 * 3 = 21
10 * 1 * 2 = 20
15 * 1 * 1 = 15
Total 56 pts

but that's the way we agreed to set it up.

The seed multiplier was an experiment to see what happens.  I figured there was a good chance it would blow up in my face, but would be entertaining nonetheless.

The goal was to keep a majority from getting eliminated too early, but it obviously fails if a person with one pick ends up winning over someone with many picks correct.

As the tournament continues, definitely give feedback on how you'd like the scoring for next year ("add seed" vs. "multiply seed" as well as how many pts for each round).  Now's the time for us to figure out a good scoring/weighting method while it's still fresh in our minds.  We'll have forgotten the details by next spring when it's time to set it up again.

It's not fair to change it now, midway through, but hopefully we come up with a good scoring system for next year.

Risk/Reward. Pretty ballsy to take an 8 seed to the final four. I would argue you should be rewarded for your convictions.

If you want to be rewarded for just # of picks correct that's fine but IMO makes it less interesting.

But in my scenario one ballsy correct pick is worth the equivalent of 6 correct picks in the last three rounds. Don't you think that's going a little bit overboard? Rewarding ballsy picks is one thing, but rendering the results of the Final 4 games meaningless is another.

Maybe reduce the multiplier?

Actually I kind of like it as it is. Granted I went chalk most of the way but as you can see stroh is on top by gambling. Yesterday Aske was on the bottom and now he is like Tiger (in contention) so it pays to gamble. If you're right you win big.

Ultimately it comes down to who picked the right underdog to go the furthest, not who picks the most correct.

im on the fence,  it benefits me now (then again, i made a lot of my picks in coin-toss type games because of the multiplier)

i don't see the seed multiplication is a big problem,  just next year weight each of the late rounds much much heavier  so there's real penalties for gambling late if you're wrong

At this point I don't care. But the odds someone picks all low seeds to the final four is small. You are assuming that the guy who picks the 8 might not pick other number 1's. It's opinion vs. opinion and I'll be in the pool no matter what the rules are. I like some sort of multiplier though.

Just a heads up for anyone that's wondering why there's a new team in the cbs/sportsline group standings called "*test bracket-doesn't count*" in 4th place.

This new bracket obviously won't count for the contest, but is there merely to speculate on the performance of various strategies (making all risky picks, all chalk, etc.) and see how different strategies would fare.

I'm hoping that next year we can come up with a good scoring balance where either an upset-laden or conservative strategy looks appealing from the outset and it will just come down to how the games play out.

propose: seed multipler stays in place
propose: round multipliers change weight to be 1,2,4,8,16,32 - basically allowing each round to theoretically weight out more equally

results: those who gamble with early upsets are justly rewarded.  those who go all chalk aren't beat out by a pure upsets bracket that hits through with 1 team going to the elite 8.

Interesting.  So the scoring for the final four would look like this:

seed
#1 8 pts
#2 16 pts
#3 24 pts
#4 32 pts
#5 40 pts
#6 48 pts

One thing I just noticed.  If you look at the seeds of the past final fours, as expected, it's very stacked with the top seeds.  So you're really taking a risk when you pick a #5 seed or higher.

Good to know that the  :airquotes: test bracket  :airquotes: is even kicking my ass this year.  :sad3: If Darla and Eagle pass me I may have to commit hara-kiri.  :shoothead:

You moved up nicely. Of course, Yoga Hottie's still going to kick your ass.

FWIW, I asked dystopia to "generate a bracket that picks the higher seed straight through EXCEPT (a) picks EVERY 11th and 12th all the way through to the Elite Eight; (b) pick the 12th seeded teams to make the Final Four; (c) I don't know, pick East and West to make the final (like Wicked Witches); and (d) pick the 12th-seed from the East to win."

I really didn't pay attention to the weighting thing, then I looked at it but didn't understand how it should factor into picking.  Just wondering how it compared to blindly gamble on EVERY 11th and 12th team v. trying to pick accurately all the way through v. picking chalk.  I'm curious like a cat.  My friends call me "Whiskers".

Wow I'm actually stunned. I've even passed the yoga hot one by a few points. So I think I've passed all the chicks now except that SgifOn broad WhoTF is she?

I just want to say that this has been a very interesting way to do it this year, this weighting system is fun. At the end of day one I was in 1st place, and the end of day two I was in 19th place, and now I've slowly creeped back in to 11th, I'm pretty sure I was mathematically eliminated when I trusted some East coast schmuck on this board regarding the almighty power of the big (L)east conference, I fella so insane he gets his jollies from telling innocent people to hit alt/f4, but I digress, sorry, Go Carolina...Go UCLAn.

Best I can do is third if my math is right. I can get close to Doodius but 'fredo and I have basically the same picks left.

Oh well.

I'm going to LMAO if all four #1 seeds make the Final Four making a mockery of the whole "multiply seed" format.

Yeah, me too.  I was all Avant Garde with my 2 number ones, and 2 number twos.  Now it seems it may just be what it is.

Whatever that means.

#1 seeds rule  ;D

I'm thinking all #1 seeds for my picks next year.  Hmmm, unless we try a funky "exponential seed" scoring format.

1st time in forever all 4 #1s made it in

But it wouldn't.  You can still score some bonus points for picking upsets in the first and second (and maybe even third) rounds, then go chalk thereafter.  Unless someone correctly picks an upset in the Elite Eight or Final Four ...

Picking Western Kentucky and Davidson for the sweet 16 is the only reason I'm winning right now.  So I like the multiply by seed dealie.

Thanks dys.!  Thanks for setting it up. [sm_thumbsup2]

My preference is still to pay it forward.

I'm open to suggestions from people.  Maybe after a few we can throw a poll up to pick a worthy cause.

How 'bout a Windows XP cd for those not fortunate enough to have their own?

No donation necessary, just fill out a bracket when the time comes.  The prize comes from this site's (meager) ad revenue.

So what does everyone think about trying the following scoring format this time?  Any other suggestions?

propose: seed multipler stays in place
propose: round multipliers change weight to be 1,2,4,8,16,32 - basically allowing each round to theoretically weight out more equally

results: those who gamble with early upsets are justly rewarded.  those who go all chalk aren't beat out by a pure upsets bracket that hits through with 1 team going to the elite 8.
