By the way, Tiger fans have credited him with the creation of the "stinger" shot, but golfers have been using it for decades. It just wasn't called the stinger. The genesis of the question was Sunday's broadcast. Can't remember the player but Johnny had him hitting a 9I or PW "stinger" approach. Looked just like a little trapped knock down to me but what do I know. Since nobody I know actually uses the term I only had the commentators' implicit definition. I guess I always figured a stinger was a 2I or so punched low off the tee. Until Sunday that seemed to be the only usage I'd ever heard. This was always my take on it. Tiger could pull a 2 iron, or 3 wood, and hit a 1/2 to 3/4 low shot (spank, if you will) that he knew would find the fairway(and still be 20 to 30 yards longer than anybody else in the field). I have not seen/heard of someone hitting a "stinger" short iron into a green. Other than in The Miller's world. ::) I guess, whatever he says, goes.
