Title: Knock Down vs. Stinger
Post by: Uisce Beatha on March 14, 2007, 07:23:01 PM
So are these the same thing or what?  [sm_dontknow]

My knock downs look an awful lot like Johnny Miller's stingers.   ??? ??? ???

Good question.  I'm not sure they're the same.  I don't know if the knock-down shot checks up like the stinger does.

By the way, Tiger fans have credited him with the creation of the "stinger" shot, but golfers have been using it for decades.  It just wasn't called the stinger.

About the only difference I know of is that the stinger is a full-force shot, whereas the knockdown is generally played with something taken off of it.

Or not.

Interesting.  Seems like it's not very well defined.

The genesis of the question was Sunday's broadcast.  Can't remember the player but Johnny had him hitting a 9I or PW "stinger" approach.  Looked just like a little trapped knock down to me but what do I know.

Since nobody I know actually uses the term I only had the commentators' implicit definition.  I guess I always figured a stinger was a 2I or so punched low off the tee.  Until Sunday that seemed to be the only usage I'd ever heard.

i thought a stinger was a stinger because it stung your hands a bit... intentionally playing it back in the stance a bit to catch it low on the clubface....  piercing ballflight  more than delofting and swinging less than full to keep it low in the wind?

This was always my take on it.

Tiger could pull a 2 iron, or 3 wood, and hit a 1/2 to 3/4 low shot (spank, if you will) that he knew would find the fairway(and still be 20 to 30 yards longer than anybody else in the field).

I have not seen/heard of someone hitting a "stinger" short iron into a green.  Other than in The Miller's world.  ::)  I guess, whatever he says, goes.

when you 'sting one' into the green it's usually called a 'blade'
[sm_rolling]... unless you're the best thing ever, like Johnny Miller

That's my "go to" shot when I'm 50-60 yards out. Unfortunately it's always when I'm trying to launch one high and land it softly.

Which club?  Three metal?  Sand iron?

I always associated a stinger as a teeshot that keeps rolling whereas a knock down is a target shot onto a green.
