Title: Yes Peter
Post by: Uisce Beatha on July 18, 2009, 09:00:05 AM
We all know you don't like the 9th and now apparently the 10th at Turnberry (first complaints I've heard from him on #10 a few minutes ago.)

Sour grapes? (http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/robhodgetts/2009/07/a_jewel_in_the_er_sun.html)

For fans heading to Turnberry, a little tip. If the weather looks ominous, the 9th tee, out on the far western extremity of the course by the famous lighthouse, might...might offer the brolly-less a last-chance refuge from the rain. We smugly dodged a deluge here as a fierce-looking squall passed across the course inside us.

Apparently, when Alliss and David Thomas did some work on the course ahead of the 1977 Open, they had wanted to resite the 9th green under the lighthouse to form a stunning par three across the water and then have a 600-odd yard par-five 10th sweeping down past the light.

"So the green hung over a little cove rather like the last green at Pebble Beach," Alliss told me.

I can imagine it would have looked great, but they only had £25,000 to play with and had to shelve their plans.

Come clean Peter!!!

(p.s.  I love listening to Peter Alliss.)

Did you hear the "well...it's a way to get from the 8th to the 10th" comment today?

I did.  LOL.

You know what though, after watching yesterday and today I agree with him.  A par-3 across the cove to a green perched south of the lighthouse followed by a long, Pebble Beach #18-esqe par five curving around the coast would be kick ass.  I think BOTH #9 and #10 are less than they might be currently.  Other than location they don't offer much.

Still, if he's going to get on a soap box about it he should come clean.  He has baggage on the issue.
