Title: Stupid dog
Post by: spacey on December 16, 2006, 11:10:49 AM
So Monte was out in the backyard playing this morning and when he came in the house he began running frantically all over the kitchen and living room leaving a trail of blood behind him. When we finally got him pinned down we discovered he had somehow ripped one of his claws in half. Part of it was just dangling like a hangnail and blood was streaming out.

He was in a lot of pain and wouldn't let us touch it (he's a very strong dog), so we took him to the vet to see how bad it really was. I thought we were overreacting but the vet told us we did the right thing. Apparently this happens all the time and when people ignore it bad things happen (infection, massive blood loss, etc.).

So they sedated him, removed part of the nail, and trimmed the rest back. It cost $135.

Monte is now lying on the couch working his hardest to wake up from the sedative, but all he's getting is some heavy breathing, a small whine every so often, and an occasional twitch of the tail or eyes. He's lucky we love him.

He's got cool markings, btw.  The white marks on his back and forehead are really interesting.

Nah, he'll be okay. It will just be tender for a while.

back growing up a while ago, we had a dog that would do similar stunts...  more frequently it was chipped teeth and cut up mouth from trying to eat rocks

There's got to be some sort of adage about rock eating dogs.

Same thing happened to our big guy about a year or so ago.  He has a habit of jumping the last five steps off the deck, onto the brick pad at the base of the steps.  Snapped a toenail WAY up there.  The vet did not knock him out before clipping it and cauterizing -- I was on the phone to my wife from the parking lot and heard the yelp.

Healed nicely, though.

He'll be fine. On the plus side for him, he gets to eat ham twice a day for a week when we feed him his antibiotics.

You don't just jam the pill down the back of his tongue?

Ham is easier, and I don't run the risk of him eating my hand.

Ham is no doubt easier to come by than small children, but rising fuel costs could change that.  Good thing you live in Utah.

It's too hard to wrap a pill inside a toddler, they tend to squirm too much.
