Some kind of organic compound. I hate organic compounds.

Does each color represent a unique element?

So,

white nubby things = H
gray spheres = N
red spheres = O
blue spheres = C

?

Does size reflect atomic number/weight?

not necessarily.

not necessarily.

Is there a way to tell the difference between a single and a double bond?

not from the way the atoms are rendered.
only from deduction/intuition.

Intuition tells me that the gray spheres are carbon atoms then, and I have to assume some of them are joined by double bonds.

So what do the numbers represent?
Quote
1,3,5-benzenetribenzoate
I recognized the benzene rings, but how do the numbers relate to how they're chained together?

I never took organic chemistry, and I was teh sukk at even acids and bases in 2nd semester chemistry.

yes, just the position on the ring where the bonds form (aka replacing the hydrogen atoms).

i thought it would be a good (yet hard) choice for a 'figure it out'  deal... so that when it was determined people could read that maybe a good CO2  sequestration  method  might start to be developed.

I see. The numbers seem to apply only to the central ring that the other rings radiate out from, but not the radiating rings themselves.

yup.  then that total formula unit repeats in space like a 'polymer' to form a nice crystal.
