Administrators of the ***** School District support providing students with the opportunity to view the President's address.  However, we also want to provide you with the option to opt out of having your child participate, if you choose.  Please return this signed letter to the school by Tuesday morning if you do not want your student to view the address.  Alternative activities will be provided for those students.

Spacey, get out while you still can.

I'll be one of the 'conservatives' to say this is much ado about nothing.  Opt-out of a presidential speech?  Freaking crazy.  The only ones worried about brainwashing are the ones that have been somewhat successful at it already and don't want the competition.

But I also wonder how some on this board would see this if it were Bush giving the speech, and that he may mention private schools and vouchers  :D

Would commie socialist fascist treehugging liberals like myself ever allow their children to bear witness to alternative viewpoints?

why, yes, of course we do.  in fact, we have words for them, we call them 'teachable moments'

fade to Blader family dinner....

Blader Jr:  "Pop, we had a man in a suit from the John Birch society come talk to us at school today."

Blader: "Well that sounds interesting, son.  Tell me. Did he have fangs and blood spatters all over his body?"

Blader Jr:  "Why, Yes, sir!  As a matter of fact, he did!  WTF was that all about?"

Blader:  "Well, son, back in an age, an age before light was invented, there was a people...."

You mean like in 1991 when Bush 41 did the EXACT SAME THING?

I don't recall much of an uproar then, but I was living in a Red State without the InnerGoogles to watch TeH Crazy.

1991..... 21 year old college student...... drank 5 nights a week.... ya, no memory of any such event  ;)

But I've never heard of allowing kids to opt-out of a presidential speech for school kids before.  What politicians will do to get their name in print these days  ::)

I had a heated conversation (via Facebook) with an old friend from school who was convinced this is the first step toward the Obama Youth Corps. She "unfriended" me when I pointed out that her kids are home-schooled and I assumed no one was going to come into her home and force her to show the speech to her children as part of her teaching curriculum.

Seriously, though, WTF has this nation come to? I realize I wasn't the most rational or clear-headed thinker when our pal Dubya was the topic of conversation, but this is a speech from the POTUS telling our nation's youth to stay in school, set educational goals, and take personal responsibility for their education. What's the problem with that?

I vaguely remember 41's speech (I was a Junior in high school at the time), and I have no recollection of my parents coming unglued over it. He wasn't exactly popular in our household either. People seriously need to get a grip.

By the way, as an unabashed libtard, I found the "I Pledge" video to be well intentioned, though terribly mishandled. (Demi Moore pledges to be "a servant to the president"? Really?) That it was shown to 1st graders without parental permission, I believe, is reasonable cause for upset, though probably not worthy of pitchforks and torches.

Spacey got unfriended!  Spacey got unfriended!   :D

Seriously, I've always come to think that the portrayal of conservative 'wingnuts' on this site was well over the top.  I still do, but I recently found out that I have one living just a few houses away.  He fits your wingnut description rather to a tee - he even scares my conservative (has republican placards in his yard during election periods) neighbor - LOL!

Politics in this country has become so polarized, we won't even listen to the other side any more.  How can anything worthwhile get done?  Why is it considered a failure if the other side succeeds at anything?  What happened to "The Common Good?"

"United we stand, divided we fall" is probably true.  We appear to be headed toward the latter.

I think it would be great for kids to listen to the scholarly experiences of the President.  What he achieved both scholasticaly and professionally is an unbelievable achievement and just might motivate some kids.

Especially those currently disenfranchized by today's education system.

You'll be glad to know that one of our local Wingtard radio hosts is currently handing out impressive doses of 'What The *fudge* Is Wrong With You' to all his callers that are complaining about this.

I'm about ready to herar him say the actual words: 'Harden The *fudge* UP'.

You know, the first 8 months or so have shown me even more vile, contemptuous people than the election did.   I'm not going to come on here and say I like everything BO has done/tried to do so far, I certainly don't expect you to like it all (if you do, so what?) , but I like to think as much as I hated the Bu$hco regime, my complaints tended to have at least a little substance behind them.  This paranoia that the evil black muslin {sic}  man has come to brainwash your kids into communist america haters  is just absurd.

Hysteria is strong today.  My republican co-workers were talking about and thinking about having their kids not hear the speech.  I asked if they even read the transcript?  Of course they hadn't.  So I printed it for them.  It is basically is a motivational speech about education and that the kids have the responsibility to follow through on their end and work hard.  Coming from someone that did just that in his lifetime I think it is a fine message to send kids.

I was sitting with my neighbors having a beer last night when they said that they were calling the school in the morning and if the speech was being shown, they were yanking their kid out of school for the day. They said he has more important things to do for an hour and a half.

These are people who wanted to vote for Hillary, but voted for McCain when Obama got nominated.  She (an immigrant from Poland) wanted to vote for a woman.  They're both pretty close to Archie Bunker when it comes to other races.

I just kept my mouth shut.  I see little point in arguing politics with idiots.

Not having kids I have heard little to nothing about this.  But its scary how many people have been reported here to have taken their kids out of school because of this.  Downright nuts it is.
