Title: Apple?
Post by: stroh on December 18, 2006, 04:56:51 PM
I may have asked this before, and probably got more than I bargained for, but here goes.

This PITA, POS box is sending me over the edge.

I'm aware of what seems to be a large anti Windows/MS sentiment here.

I am interested in buying an Apple.  I have no experience with one, personally.

Our oldest daughter has had one for 4+ years, and loves it.  My BIL bought one last year and raves the same.  When I talk to the IT guys at work, the speak highly of them, even though the entire company (in house) is all pc, Windows.  What they say is 'their IT duties extend out of the building, to the Doctors house, for all upgrades, crashes, etc.  They never get 1 call for those Rad.s that have Macs.  they just work.

Thoughts?

At a crossroads.  Don't roast me. ;D

if you're ditching winblows, go all out.  get a real linux box, not a pretty case/gui with proprietary hardware

I guess since windows, is basically all encompassing as an OS.  That maybe what I'm thinking, even if I can't articulate it.

I was never an Eensteen, by any stretch, but I am clearly falling behind the curve.

I am at a point now, when I want to do something, with something, and find myself completely lost on where to start.  I can't find files.  I can't seem to be able to move them, I cant get user "views" to do/display what I want...........etc., etc.

I'm not looking for a "Fisher Price" 2 button computer, but,  lately, things seem out of hand.

I have some images on a cd, I can't "move" move anywhere, and nothing will read them, because they are TIFFs.

on, and on.

That new series of commercials with the 2 guys: "hi, I'm MAC, I'm pc.....etc"
really appeals to me.

But, see, that is my point.  One more thing, I have to find, open, use,(remember how to use next time) remember it's there next time.

It goes on, and on [sm_disgust]

My user pref.s are all over the place, things open on on there own........

I guess my question is will it make my life easier?

probably after the learning curve.

my point is, since you have the learning curve, go with the one that's a bit steeper with real linux, and become more pc proficient, while saving some $

we use linux and winblows @ work,  and winblows @ home  (too many winblows programs needed)

Now, first, my spysweeper says(in a pop) it can't get updates. I have no effin idea why.  I got to get manual updates, everything seems fine, re install spysweeper and this comes up:

So, why does SS, and Norton fight?

How do I know for sure what " is-OUEVER.tmp is???!!!

Do I allow it?  I go through sh1t like this every day. >:( >:( :sad3: :sad3:

I've had several Mac's over the years.... mostly when I had my Recording Studio and Record Label, then later on when I was doing Graphic Design work. Back then Mac's weren't so good with day to day stuff you do on PC but the latest Mac's can do it all... ofcourse there's that old standard about Windows 95 and so forth being Mac 82.....

Ironically I don't have a Mac right now but might get one soon to replace the calculator that calls itself a PC on my desl at home... ;)

No.  But the windows firewall does work adequately enough for being something from windows.  And there is certainly some good, free firewalls out there as well if you don't want to rely on m$.

I have about two dozen.  Two at home.  Three on my desk at work.  Another 15-20 in the server farm.  I've been running my business on 100% Apple since 1996.  Granted, the Amelio and Scully years were tough but we made it through and things are swell.   [sm_shock] ;D

I don't have a problem with any *nix platforms but that "proprietary software" that Aske disdains has a stupid small learning curve.  If you're a propeller head then by all means build your own machine and configure it from the kernel up.  If you're normal, consider a Mac.   ;)

Stroh, if you or someone you know is an educator you can get 15% off at the brick and mortar Apple Store.  All you need is a district ID or even just a paycheck.  My wife subs part-time at a private school and I do their website.  That was good enough for something like $200 off the Macbook I bought in August.

I'm late to this discussion, but is there a way you can try out your daughter's mac for a few sessions to get a feel for it and see if you like it better than your pc?

Also, what are the top activities you use your home computer for?  If it's like most people (surfing, email, home finance, music/pictures/movies), I'd recommend a mac over linux.

I'm sitting at a desk with a Solaris box, a Mac, and two Windows machines (2000 & XP).

Personally, I find the Mac interface really nice for basic stuff, but the hard stuff is harder to do on a Mac than a Windows machine (unless you're a real super user type).  (Things like defragging a disk or killing misbehaving processes)  Most of the time, though, you're not doing anything difficult.  I also find that there are fewer shareware/freeware programs out there for Macs, so you might end up paying more for software, if you're into freeware.

The benefit to Windows is that it's a really common OS.  Lots of advice online (or from the neighbor kid) if you get stuck, lots of freeware/shareware, lots of Windows-specific games, etc.  The downside is that you can get yourself into trouble by downloading all kinds of random freeware and/or taking bad advice from the neighbor kid.

I wouldn't recommend a Solaris box for a home user.  :)

Yep, in fact, she'll be home from kollidge this weekend.  I'll try to spend some time on it.

And, that is really all we would use it for.  Karen is even more discouraged, than I, to the point, she won't even go on this pc. :sad3:

We just want easy online (read: golhos) email, pic.s, movies, music, storage, chairs, soft food, more security, cheap prescriptions,..

I guess I might be considered a bit of a super user but...

Defragging HFS+ volumes is essentially unnecessary plus OSX does a great job of defragging on the fly with delayed allocation and such.

Killing an unwanted/hung app is as easy as hitting command-option-escape.  Killing an unwanted process admittedly can be much more difficult if you don't know what you're doing.  You're a *nix user at that point.  Of course, figuring out which task to kill in Windows is no simple matter if you don't know what they all do.  Sixes really.  The funny thing is that in spending 8-12 hours per day on Macs the only thing I ever have to kill is MS products.

Based on what you say stroh I think OSX with its bundled apps (iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD) might be a good fit.  Those apps are first class and for some strange reason rarely get consideration in the PC vs. Mac price comparisons.  They're worth a few hun under any standard.

There's one point that can't be disputed no matter how much of a Mac zealot one might be.  There are *far* more software options available for use on a PC.  At times there simply isn't a Mac version of the software you need.  That's more of an issue in a work environment though.  Most if not all of the home stuff is out there for Mac.

Now... where's AZCowboy to tell me Mac OSX isn't Unix.  I have my POSIX links (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posix) handy.   ;) [sm_devil]

Sorry about that.  That's my fault.  He said something about logging in as you and cranking his karma up to 1,000, and I thought he was serious.  So I put a minus sign in front of his karma, so that any self-bumping of his own karma would just be digging a karma hole.  Since he never did it, I took away the minus sign.

Stroh,

Last year I ran screaming from Windows, and got myself an iMac G5 (PowerPC chip).  I couldn't be happier.  Like Uisce, my older son is a bit of an expert when it comes to Macs (he owns an all digital commercial photo studio).  Maintenance is not an issue.  Your .tiff files will open with Preview, a program bundled with the system.  Most, if not all, of your Office files will open under AppleWorks, and Office for Mac isn't that expensive.

Plus, if you are really masochistic, you can run Windows on the Intel Macs.[sm_disgust]

Go for it,

Ted

Ted, that's funny!  That's what started this whole thing.  I was at Costco and walked up to this 24 inch Apple "monitor".  I thought, cool, nice!  I grabbed the mouse, and started playing.  Then I "looked" for the "computer" part.  LOL
