I don't think so.

Drive by wire as in no rack and pinion like jets fly by wire?

Or drive by wire like I can finally drink all the tall beers I want at the bar, get into the car to head home and say "Hey, don't look at me.  The car is doin' the work I'm just along for the ride." ?

Now that would be something....lol....

But DbW is just a replacement of all the mechanical interfaces with the car, ie brakes, steering, throttle etc. with electronic gizmos. So that all your inputs are computed and relayed via electronics rather than a mechanical force. It would basically get rid of the steering column, throttle cables, brake boosters etc etc.

Zactly, hence the current Toyota problem. I like knowing there is a cable attached to that pedal that has worked just fine for 50 years.  ;)

No *feces*: The relay is WAY more dependable than the cable ever was. That's why they call it 'Progress'.

Having once had a break line bust and losing all hydraulic pressure at the PRECISE moment it was needed, I'm willing to consider an alternative, new-fangled approach.

The current Toyota problem appears to be equal parts minor technical glitch, media frenzy, and moronic drivers who don't realize that there are 2 or even 3 pedals required to operate the vehicle.

In a properly maintained vehicle this would never happen. Just sayin.  ;)

I was in college, when maintaining a vehicle properly only meant cleaning up all the loose panties from under the seats before coming home to visit mom.

actually, it was a vw rabbit that developed holes in the floor---a flintstone mobile that could get pretty wet inside from water splashing up from the road...a nuisance but not exactly mission critical....turns out, and you don't realize this until they blew..but .the break lines ran on the floorboard on the inside of the car, and rusted right along with the floorboard rot.

Yeah but the ability to drop the beer through the floorboards like a trap door when the police had you pulled over so he couldn't see it scouring the car with his maglight far outweighed any nuisance limited braking may have brought.

A shining example of the Brilliance of stroh.  Probably the most reasoned and thoughtful response imho written here or in any other interwebs sites.
