What was at stake was who would eat first. So coveted are G&M's crab cakes that not only do lines of hungry devotees stretch out the door, but the delicacies can be ordered online and shipped overnight anywhere in the country. Baltimore magazine named them the best in the region in 2004 and 2005, according to the restaurant's Web site.

Assistant State's Attorney Michael Dunty maintains that Rites, 39, of Violetville, responded before Rantin, 31, a Reisterstown barber and home rehabber, when the "who's next?" call went out at lunchtime March 28.

Asserting that Rites was not next, Rantin began arguing, and the confrontation went from words to shoving to the stabbing, the prosecutor said.

Rites had his left wrist slashed and left lung punctured.

Ok, here is a simple recipe that people love and you won't have to stab anyone:

Take a pound of crabmeat, jumbo lump preferred.
Mix in a half cup of tricolor peppers (or just green if you want to skimp)
1/4 cup of sweet onions
1/4 cup of mayo
2 medium eggs
3/4 cup of breadcrumbs, preferably seafood breadcrumbs
1 tablespoon old bay seasoning
A couple pinches of dry mustard
A few splashes of Worcestershire

Mix well and form into hockey puck sized cakes (maybe a little smaller in diameter, yet thicker). Now don't fry them, frying makes them tough on the outside. Bake them at 375* for maybe 12-15 minutes, turn about 2/3 of the way through and then toss a small pat of butter on top if you want. I'm not 100% on the cooking time, but you want them to firm up until they feel like a medium well steak. They shouldn't dent easily. Serve with a nice Cajun mustard remoulade. Enjoy.

dystopia, you know and I both know that blue crab is overrated compared to dungeness, and it's certainly not worth stabbing someone over. ;D

No way!  I'm a blue crab guy even though I live in dungeness country now.  I had a summer internship in DC after my junior year in college and lived in Maryland.  I refer to it as my Chesapeake Summer of Crab(s)... :glasses: [sm_devil] ;D

(Not that I'm trying to start a "cast vs. forged"-like crab flame war or anything)

I'm kind of half-paying attention to posting.  I'm trying to figure out my fantasy hockey trades in another tab as well as...

Echo what spaceage said plus....it can be good for you.

The Japanese perennially have the longest life span in the world. A lot of that is attributed to their traditional fish and rice based diet.

But for me, mainly cuz it tastes good.

I don't understand why people are shocked.  I can easily see killing someone over a really good Maryland shore crab cake.

Absolutely.

But that's the question: Why do you think it tastes good?  What is it that you like about it?

Oh, and I like fish - a lot!  I like fishing, too.  But I haven't found other types of seafood tasty very often.  I've had shrimp a few times.  Liked it once, didn't like it the other times.

If it's prepared properly, then many types of seafood can be melt-in-your-mouth buttery, and sometimes has a bit of sweetness that works well with a spicy or salty sauce/seasoning.

(Of course it's easy to prepare seafood badly, and then it's like eating bicycle tires.  And, there's always the creepy 'I'm eating an entire animal, organs and all' feeling with smaller crustaceans.)

For the exact same reason that Torpedo is getting sick of minestrone soup. There are only so many ways that you can cook beef, chicken, and pork before it all starts to taste the same. Seafood is far less accessible to most people than meats derived from land-dwelling animals, so seafood is like a luxury item when people have an opportunity to consume it.

I have no idea where you've eaten seafood but.....it really does depend on how it's prepared. For instance, IMO Red Lobster is not "seafood".

I think worst_golfer summed it up well as far as taste goes. And for me, chin hit the nail on the head. I just don't have good seafood enough and when I do I absolutely love it.

Considering where you live, I suspect you have some great, fresh, freshwater fish available to you, so it's no surprise that you like it. Conversely, you probably have a lot of previously frozen and subpar seafood to choose from.

The difference between the fresh fish you catch, and frozen fish sticks, is pretty much the difference between frozen and fresh seafood.

Most of us landlocked folks have never had good seafood unless we've traveled to the coast(s). We have some pretty good seafood restaurants in Utah who fly the stuff in fresh daily, and they're decent, but still nothing like you can find on the coast. If frozen is all you've ever tried, I can certainly see why there would be a distaste for the stuff.

Good point.  I live near enough to the coast that good local restaurants can get fresh fish.

A coworker just returned from a weeklong fishing trip 120 miles off the coast of Panama.  He said lunch (out on the little fishing boats launched from the mother ship) went like this: catch a fish (he didn't specify, I forgot to ask); filet it; somebody dumps a clump of wasabe of the fileting table; everyone digs in.  Sushi that literally was swimming 5-10 minutes before it's in your mouth.

mmmmm....fresh sushi and sashimi. Very nice.

I went on a snorkeling trip one day in the Caribbean in the early 90's and the guy running the boat was catching/speargunning stuff for a couple hours. At lunch he'd cook it up.

Most unbelievable meal I've ever had.

That makes a lot of sense!  I hear so many people raving about seafood and I wonder why so many people enjoy something that tastes like bike tires.  I can definitely understand how freezing it to ship it in would change the texture and taste - never thought of that before now, though.

I really like fish!  I like catching fish, too!  And I even like filleting fish. :)
Before Kev and I took up golf, we spent our summer's fishing.  Now, I need to find a way to do both more often.  Fresh fish is so good, and I miss how frequently we used to eat it. :(  Kev on the other hand probably does not miss (eating) it at all.

Wow, that brought back a flood of memories!  Ice fishing for perch, that is.  There was one day where a school was going through the area and we couldn't get them off the hook fast enough as just as we went to get one off another one would also need to be tended.  One of my most favorite memories of my grandfather, dad, and Kev. ;D

Pacific Seafood in SLC used to sell OTC, and their seafood was really fresh and of good quality, you should try them sometime.

We had a retail account with them and used to make weekly trips down to get lingcod for our fish and chips...Lingcod prices have more than doubled in the last couple of years, so we switched to halibut which we get through our foodservice guys.

I knew this story took place in Maryland before I even opened the thread.  Born and raised in Bmore so I've had my fair share of steamed crabs, crab cakes and steamed shrimp.

Ole Bay seasoning is the key.

I steam about 5-6 bushels of crabs every year for these folks in Virginia who have no clue on how to steam crabs.
