Title: Our master plan unveiled....(LONG)
Post by: Walfredo on September 19, 2007, 02:41:28 PM
So my wife and I have begun taking our first steps to enjoying our working lives.  We both aren’t happy with our jobs.  We both feel under whelmed by our B.B.A’s and the opportunities they provide.  She has a double major marketing/mgmt and mine was mgmt/econ.

She works for an eye doctor that also does vision therapy for children.  Likes what they do but not how they do it.  And she has become the accountant/auditor fixing everyone’s screw ups instead of marketing.  Also, she doesn’t feel she can ethically promote this business for numerous reasons.  Not to mention the lack of any raises in the future for all the work she does beyond her job description.

I am in Risk Management.  I work with great people but the work is unfulfilling.  I spend most of my time providing information to people that don’t know how to use it and/or have already made the decision and just want it to support that decision.  Plus it is in insurance which I have no desire to either learn about or stay in for the long term.

I’m 27 she is 26 and we don’t want to be complacent and stay in jobs we hate the rest of our lives.

She is going to cosmetology school to become a hair stylist which is something she always wanted.  She is quitting her job today and starting school mid Oct.  After nine months she will build her practice and look to open her own salon.  She already has a few friends that are experienced hair stylists; make up artists etc that would love to work at her salon.  She will be amazing at it and I have all the faith in the world that she will succeed.

After that I’m going to law school.  I’ve always wanted to and now I feel it is time to take on the challenge.  I’ll work through 2008 so I’m fully vested in my 401k, cash out and get my last bonus and start fall 2009 at OU (hopefully).  I’m finally excited about my professional future for the first time in my life.  And I can’t wait.

I figured my son who is almost 11 months old now will be proud of us once we achieve these goals.  I couldn’t very well expect him to go after his dreams if I gave up on mine.

Thanks for reading.

Good for you!

If I knew at age 27 what I know now (career-wise speaking) I'd be damn tempted to do something similar.

Wow!  I'm genuinely excited for both of you.  Best of luck.

Great story.  I'm sure with that kind of pre-thought, teamwork, and dedication.....You guys will succeed.

An excellent time to do it as well - while you and your child are still young.  Good luck!

Excellent decision and for all the right reasons.  I waited longer than you when I did somthing similar.  No regrets, other than I should have done it sooner.  Best of luck to you both.

Good choices all around.  If I may impart some advice on the salon options.  They make crazy money but you have to be smart about where you open and how you go about it.  My buddies wife is from Dominca and is working on her citizenship.  She came here and started out washing hair in a salon as an assistant.  Eventually learned on the job to style and built up a clientele.  She then decided to open her own salon about 8 months ago.  She found a fully built out salon that had gone out of business.  It was successful under the original owners who sold to the previous owner who didn't have a clue and ran it into the ground.  The landlord not wanting an empty space worked some easy terms and for 18k in supplies, licenses and fee's she was open and running.  That is a huge savings over having to build out a blank store-front from scratch.  In the past 8 months she replaced the 18k they took from the savings account and is averaging $2,500 a week with just one other girl working for her.
