Usenet groups with names like alt.music.mighty.mighty.bosstones.discussions.about.their.songs.and.albums.and.other.random.stuff were not uncommon.

I was on some BBSs' prior to that but I can't remember what they were, local houston chat as I recall. I used AOL 1.something as well. It came with GeoWorks.
