Title: Hobbit and Gamma Pi take on the old guys Post by: Gamma Pi on April 30, 2009, 05:39:54 PM We have our first match on Saturday in the club two-man best ball event. We, relative newbies, are playing against a couple of the original members. Neither of our games are in shape to dominate, in fact, Hobbit just took a *goshdarn* lesson last night. And, I haven't been playing or practicing much at all, but I did get out to practice a couple nights ago. Two hours and I didn't take a single full swing; all short pitches, sand shots and chips. I feel much better after that session, but I'm approaching this match with more anxiety than a normal match or tournament and I think it's because it's not just for me, but for both of us. Nevertheless, I am really looking forward to "getting my glare on" and being referred to as a Jackass... even if it is from my partner.

The guys we're playing are really old, such that I think they order Rye neat, call people sonny and instead of just turning their head, they turn their whole body to look when someone calls their name.

I could add lots to this, but I'm too tired and impaired to recreate it on my own. Didn't even have time for a celebratory beer. I had to rush home from the course because of the freakin' 5 hour round, plus the extra holes, and just got back home from our dinner and movie thingy. It's off to bed... coma calls. By the way... "State of Play" was very entertaining.
TODAY....... It took 20 holes!!!! Once again my par to their bogey won the match for Gamma and Hobbit! No team was ever up by more than one hole the entire day. They had the early lead, we evened it up and gained a lead of our own for quite a while. Then they came back, we evened it up, got a lead again - coughed that up on 17, and had to go 20 holes before a winner showed. Quite a match! We did disparage each others character throughout the match, but no jackass tauntings were launched. So, we behaved as well towards each other as partners as we're capable of. Gamma said I carried him today, but his contribution wasn't that lopsided. One of our competitors was a great guy, great competitor (carried his partner), and was fun to play with. His partner...... a jackass (and not the good kind). He's not friendly at all, never thanked us for finding his ball, never complimented a shot.... then bitched to the Director of Golf about not being able to have a flag on his cart (it was cart path only today, as we had a *feces* load of rain and were playing lift clean and place). I have no idea why he thought he should be driving on soaked fairways, but he made as ass of himself with his behavior and I think he let it bother his game. THEN, on the 20th hole - I move my mark for him, he chips on and is still out, I move my mark back. He misses the par putt, I proceed to sink mine to win. As soon as it goes in the hole he looks at me and says 'did you replace your mark?' AFTER I hit the putt he says this - the ass. *fudge* him, he's out! Competition brings out character - three of us distinguished ourselves, one showed his ass. Oh - and the 'young guys' walked all 20 holes - we don't need no stinkin cart! Well, we did choke on 17 with a 1 up lead to allow the match to go the extra holes. But went par-par-par on the 18th, 19th and 20th when our opponents finally choked. For most of the round we were playing against one guy that was having a good day. When he lost it on the 20th hole and needed his partner - he was let down.
