Title: She's Making It Very Difficult.
Post by: stroh on August 01, 2008, 06:22:38 PM
I've been a Wie apologist from day one.  I thought she had skills, and was anxious to see her on tour.

When she came close, and when she stumbled at The Sony, and others, I said 'Man, she's close.  They won't let her play on the chick tour, but when she does, look out.'

Then a few more outings that were increasingly embarrassing.  Then I start think, well just wait on this deal, hone your game, turn 18, and hit the chick tour running.

Disappointing.  But still I say 'But look at what shes been through.  Give it time.'

I have to admit that the wrist withdrawal was awfully suspicious, but I give her her word.

Jump to the latest.  Which is of course the move that this time was very highly and very publicly criticized by not only the media, but her peers as well:  The Reno-Taho Open.

And once again missed the cut (http://msn.foxsports.com/golf/story/8401302/Wie-misses-cut-at-Reno;-McLachlin%27s-62-ties-record) at a PGA Tour Mens event for the 8th straight time.

She is making it not just more difficult to root for, have great expectations for, and defend to the naysayers, but down right impossible.

Michelle, please stop.

Maybe she should try out for the Big Break.

I followed some of the play-by-play yesterday and today, and it seems that her game is coming around. She was regularly splitting fairways with 320+ yard drives. I recall one going over 340 yards. Her driving accuracy today was 71%--even better than yesterday. Her drives were rarely that accurate even when she was playing well in LPGA tourneys back in 2006.

Most of her big mistakes came when she had to hit mid to long irons on approaches, and these mistakes weren't due to hitting them too short either. She hit tons of flyers over the greens. Her poor distance control on mid/long irons really put pressure on her short game. She definitely needs more practice with mid/long irons, but in her defense she doesn't get much practice hitting those shots in LPGA tournaments.

I think where she's improved markedly is in her short game. Yesterday her chipping and putting really saved her ass because she hit fewer greens yesterday than she did today but scored much better yesterday. She also didn't putt as well today, but her 26 putts today ain't too shabby either.

It's easy to look at the 80 that she posted today and say she should just give it up, but her bad score really came down to two blow-up holes late in the 2nd round when she was probably starting to press to try to make the cut. I like the fact that she regained her composure enough after carding the quintiple bogey on her 17th hole by birdying the 18th.
