Title: Big, BIG NASCAR news...

Add another line to Tony Stewart's resume: team owner.

Joe Gibbs Racing announced Wednesday it has agreed to release Stewart, a two-time Cup Series champion, from the final year of his contract. In turn, Stewart is purchasing what is believed to be a 50 percent stake in Haas CNC Racing and will drive for the team in 2009.

Thanks for a great ten years. I watched his first Daytona where he started about 35th and was in the top 10 inside of 30 laps. I'd seen him race USAC, and he was already an established Indy Car star.

Were any of us ever this young?

Boy he's just a kid in that photo. I've always had a love/hate relationship with Tony, but it should be exciting watching him next year. I had read that Ryan Newman may also join the team.

Zackley!  NASCAR was struggling until it was infused with some WWE.

Tony's known since he got there that he could quit NASCAR any day and go do what he really loves , which is race open wheel. Of course, it would be for not as much money and against not as good (by far) talent.

I suspect after his first championship in a car (Pontiac) that had been declared obsolete by the   :airquotes: cognoscenti  :airquotes: Gibbs and Home Depot would have gone with, and willingly.

So instead of towing the company line all the time, when he thinks something or somebody is *fudge*ed up, he says so.

David Hobbs called him one of the 10 greatest living (not 'Active', 'Living' and he was very clear in the distinction) drivers. Hobbs is the F1 commentator for Speed, and  has either seen or raced against anybody of any note since the early 60's.

High praise indeed, and it's a great thing to see him move to the next phase of his career, while still staying in touch with his roots:

I've heard the same thing.

Newman has a degree in engineering from Purdue, and should be a great assett on the track and off. I suspect he's there long term as well.
