His official position is that neither is incorrect, it's a matter of personal preference, and that both are terms that should be avoided whenever possible as it's a stylistic nightmare to conjugate the verb "plead" into past tense in the first place. Take it for what you will.
All that being said, I'll usually use "pled" because it's fewer letters and syllables, and I'm far too busy to waste time on superfluousness.
