Title: Yoga Baby!!
Post by: Dunk on April 16, 2008, 09:29:56 AM
Had an awesome class last night.  I've been doing yoga for about 8 years, and it's really been helping my golf game.

Losing range of motion is a major factor in aging but you don't have to lose that flexibility.  Plus, I've gained a surprising amount of upper body strength.

I've thought about it, but it would mean less time on the golf course for me, and we can't have that. ;D

Yoga for Golfers - By throwing your goals off the fairway and practicing being present in the process, you can play a better golf game.   By Baron Baptiste and Kathleen Finn Mendola

Perhaps no game is more wrought with mental hazards than golf. The sport introduces a constant struggle between the conscious mind—analyzing, alert, logical—and the subconscious mind—the well of intuition and long-term memory. Though golf fundamentals like body stance and stroke are learned in the conscious mind, they are stored in the nether regions of the subconscious.

This clash between subconscious and conscious mind presents an opportunity for the awakened athlete to override the mental strife created by the overanalyzing conscious mind and reach toward the wakeful, clear mind state accessible through the intuitive subconscious.

Golfers who don't learn the nuances of the mental game of golf remain frustrated or give up before mastering the sport. Yet by incorporating elements of yoga practice, you can develop the mental discipline that golf demands.

No, I think yoga like that would make you rather inflexible.

So seriously, is there an easy way to start or get into yoga? We had talked about karate but didnt pursue it.

I am in desperate need of flexibility and fitness

I don't know the answer but I know someone who does.  Let's invite Katherine Roberts on the forum and see what she has to say.

I just Googled "Yoga Dallas"

http://www.dallasyogacenter.com/     http://www.yogadallas.com

And I guarantee there are yoga classes at most fitness centers now as well.  Also, what fun would Google be without finds like this:

DNY4M is a private, member's only group for men interested in the practice of yoga without the restrictions of clothing. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for real male community and holistic social interaction between supportive, centered individuals who enjoy the company of other naked men. We strive to provide an atmosphere of comradery, body-acceptance, and sensuality (not ****uality). Although sensuality is an intrinsic part of this group practice, it should be clear that this is not intended to be a blatantly ****ual venue.

DNY4M is open to adult men of all ages and body types. You don't have to have a perfect body to join and attend our classes, but you should be in good health and seriously interested in the pursuit of the yogic experience, as sessions can be physically demanding. It should be clear that IT IS NOT for those who are in need of serious physical rehabilitation or those who just want to come and admire. Our sessions are for healthy, fitness-oriented men who take care of themselves and their bodies. THIS IS NOT A HAVEN FOR PASSIVE VOYEURS.

Although predominantly gay, all men are welcomed--gay, bi or straight. Diversity among members only adds to the dimension of this group of men, leading to a richer yoga experience. You will work . . . you will sweat . . . and you'll love it.

OK! Where do I sign up?  [sm_disgust]

So I guess classes are the best way to start, once in it at are comfortable with doing it can you easily do it on your own?

Now that you mention it, there are probably DVD programs along the lines of any of the 100's of fitness programs I see on infomercials.

I think a class wouldn't be as intimidating as you might think. Especially one geared for beginners.

So seriously, just *goshdarn* do it. There's yoga everywhere these days.  My wife does Anusara (http://www.anusara.com/index.php?pagerequested=about_anusara) -- its teachers have more rigorous certification requirements than most, especially v. YMCA- or healthclub-type classes.  I can get you a referral in Dallas if you want.

As Fuzzy mentioned, yes, that is my  :airquotes: triangle :airquotes: in the avatar.

And yet, my man hasn't ever attended a yoga class [sm_shock]....not even one that I teach :sad3:

It's been me experience that the best thing about yoga is the opportunity to golf with people all over the USA and Canada.

Whenever my wife went for training/seminars/workshops in various places, I'd haul my clubs along and golf for 3 or 4 days.  Because of her training, I've golfed in Minneapolis, Dallas, Denver, Houton, Vancouver and Phoenix.

I'm a totally devoted husband.

Dude has a hot Irish wife who takes him golfing all over the western hemisphere.  Even if he has nothing else going for him he's easily one of the most accomplished men I've ever met.
