Title: My best friend in all the world is gone.......
Post by: PaunchyBald on December 01, 2007, 09:34:14 AM
I had to put down my dog.  She was 14 1/2 yrs old.  A Jack Russell Terrier.  The abdominal tumor is what got her in the end.  She had less than a 50/50 chance of surviving the surgery to remove it.

So we didn't have the surgery done.  She stopped eating Thanksgiving week.  While I was gone, the wife said, she wandered around the house searching every room for me.  She lost control of her bowels.  She could barely stand.  I told the wife to do what she thought was best while I was gone, but to try to hold on till I got home.

Evidently, my Lindy was in too much pain to be picked up and held by Thursday, so the wife took her to the vet and had her put down.

I just finished burying her in the back yard near the fence where she loved to stand and bark at the horses.  Later today, after I stop crying, I'll move a fairly large rock to mark her resting place.

You wouldn't think an old crusty bastard like me would cry over some damn dog would you?

I thought more of that dog than I do of most people.

A man who refuses to cry over "some damn dog" isn't much of a man in my estimation. Sorry to hear about your loss. Sometimes the hardest thing you will ever do is what is best for your friend and companion. As much as it hurts, it's the least you can do for them to know when it's time to let them go.

As I see gray hair starting to form on Monte's brow and muzzle, I can't help but think of something my brother said to me a few years ago: One of the cruelest things in nature is that a turtle can live upwards of 100 years, and you are lucky to get 12-14 years with your dog.

 :sad3:  Hang in there, man.  Rest in peace, Lindy.

Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made.
~Roger Caras

A man may smile and bid you hail
Yet wish you to the devil;
But when a good dog wags his tail,
You know he’s on the level.

That's tough PB.  My Mom and StepDad went through the same thing with their 13 year-old lab mix last spring.  Belle was such a sweet dog, we were all broken up.

If it's any consolation, Emma (to the left), is my son's Jack puppy.  She has 5 acres of field and woods to run in, a good buddy dog (Cosmo, the one my son "borrowed" five years ago) to live with, and another pal on weekends (Lucy, Cosmo's predecessor).

Hang in there buddy.

I'm so sorry. :sad3:

We do form a closeness with our pets, and that's a very special thing.  In 2002, my friend had to put her dog down.  Never having a dog of my own, I had adopted her as my own.  She was a sweet dog, and it hurt to let her go, but that's a far better choice than to let them suffer just so you can have them with you.  I'm so thankful for all the fun times I had with her.

Lindy wasn't "just a dog"; she was your dog and a good companion over many years.  She was a friend to you over the extended course of time.  So very sorry. :sad3:

Aw man...sorry PB.

It's one of the hardest things you can do.

Take time to mourn, take time to remember, and when a fair time has passed find a new "bestest friend".

I waited 7 years after I put down my last dog, the pain was just too much, and then I bought Ozzy, 7 years is too long.

Hang in there brother.

Sorry to hear that man  :'(

The lady across the street called me on Tuesday crying because her dog had died that day.  It is like losing one of the family.

Sorry to hear it, PB.  We had a tumor scare with our bigger, older dog (who's been with us for 7+ years now).  It really hit us hard, and we didn't even lose him.

I talk to him when I'm lonesome like,
And I'm sure he understands
When he looks at me so attentively,
And gently licks my hands;
Then he rubs his nose on my tailored clothes,
But I never say naught thereat,
For the good Lord knows I can buy more clothes,
But never a friend like that!
