Ummm......winters in MN probably should have been taken into account.

School district officials said they decided to close schools because of the low temperatures and windchills predicted for this morning. The district experienced problems with a number of its school buses Thursday morning when state-required biodiesel fuel began to clog the buses' fuel systems

I was going to start a thread ranting about the "pussification"  ;) of America earlier as well. All Most school districts in the metro area were 2 hour late starts* today. This makes sense because when the bus came for my oldest the air temp was all the way up to -19 from the -23 at what would have been the regular time.  ::)

I get the outstate/rural districts being cautious in this weather (longer bus rides, more remote from help, etc.) but city/suburbs? Either it's too dangerous or it's not. Two hours in the morning isn't going to change much.

*2 hour late starts have seemingly become the norm for districts in this state. Winter weather iffy? Push the start time back 2 hours! I haven't seen a good reason for why that has become the magic number.

This morning it was -22.

Apparently that's the line for our district as the start times were not delayed this morning.

 [sm_dontknow]

edit: I went outside 20 minutes ago. I perhaps understand the decision a little better. No wind at all today and with the bright sun out it felt.............refreshing. Or it was a hallucination from all my coffee this morning.

But I'm not sure. Maybe I just naturally hallucinate.  8)

Either it's too dangerous or it's not. Two hours in the morning isn't going to change much.

This has always been my take.  I don't understand it.

I do appreciate the attempt to save children out at the bus stop.  Protection from idiot parents, etc.

Any diesel engine, running on traditional or biodiesel fuel,  will fail to start in the extreme cold thanks to gelling.
Now, why they are buying blends that dont come preformulated with antigelling agents to minimize the heating time to get the engine startable...

They do sell a different formula around here in the winters for that reason. I've got a diesel in a little garden tractor I own and sometimes use to plow snow and it is extremely difficult to start when it gets below zero.

Apparently this year's "winter blend" didn't like -20.

Here's a little primer on diesel fuel.  There are two kinds, (Stroh, don't be confused, it has nothing to do with going to the bathroom) number 2 and number 1 (aka heater oil)  Number 2 is fine until it gets cold, then you either need to blend it with no. 1 or if it's really cold go to straight no. 1, as the no. 1 won't gel as easily.

No. 1 and No. 2 diesel fuels are made for use in highway vehicles. While No. 2 diesel is the more common of the two, No. 1 diesel is better for use in cold weather. This is because it has a lower boiling point and is lighter than No. 2 diesel. This makes it less susceptible to gelling or waxing in cold weather, and thus better able to flow through a car's engine. However, No. 1 diesel is more expensive than No. 2 diesel. This is why many people blend the two diesels together for use in cold weather conditions.
