Title: College Mascot: Name and History?
Post by: Clive on January 31, 2007, 09:44:49 AM
As part of the continuing effort to exclude those without jobs or college educations from Golfhos discussions ...

1. What was the name of your college alma mater's mascot?  (I mean the general team names (e.g. Miami Hurricanes, Pittsburgh Panthers), not a particular dude in a costume.)

2. Where did the name come from?

Everyone seems to know the answer to the first question, but it surprised me how few people knew how their school's teams got the names they did.

For the junior set: use your high school instead of college.  8)

University of Utah Utes. The Utes are one of the native tribes of the area, and where Utah got its name.

The old U of U mascot was the "Runnin' Redskins." Apparently the PC libs thought this was racially insensitive. The Ute tribe currently approves and oversees the use of their tribe name, so the U has that going for them, which is nice.

In a further PC lib push, they've abandoned the white frat-boy dressed like an injun with a spear riding around on a horse in favor of someone dressed in a costume of a red-tailed hawk named Swoop.

University of Wisconsin-Madison.

1. Badgers.  Bucky the Badger is the name of the mascot.

2. The state is known as "The Badger State". I also found the following: Through an association with lead miners in the 1820s. Prospectors came to the state looking for minerals. Without shelter in the winter, the miners had to 'live like badgers' in tunnels burrowed into hillsides. IMO, lame.

Leeroy the Tiger [{Trinity} Tigers]- don't know/remember why.  I'm sure I heard when they were giving a tour. probably because tigers are fierce creatures and it sounded good and was certainly original  :P

Scottie Dog [{Carnegie Mellon} Tartans]. I guess they couldnt find a living Tartan. So a scottie is about the next best thing.

1. Cornell Big Red - (picture the color, not the gum) There's no official mascot.  The unofficial one is a bear.

2.  I had no idea and had to look it up.  Pretty random, really.  In hindsight, they could have come up with better.

Quote
The nickname "Big Red" for Cornell teams originated in 1905. The late Romeyn Berry '04, then a recent Cornell graduate, was writing the lyrics for a new football song. Since Cornell had no nickname at the time, Berry simply referred to Cornell as the "big red team" and it caught on.

Quote
The first live Cornell bear mascot appeared in 1915 during Cornell's undefeated and national championship football season. Since that time, there were three others.

The last edition - Touchdown IV - was never allowed on Schoellkopf Field despite strong publicity campaigns by the Cornell Daily Sun and undergraduate groups.

The bear was invited to Cleveland by the Cornell alumni in the city, and was then shipped in a dog cage, to Columbus, Ohio for the Ohio State-Cornell game. At this point, the Animal Protective League stepped in and decreed that the bear was to be let loose in the wilds of Western Pennsylvania.

2. Because the football team is the Division 1-AA equivalent of the Detroit Lions.

Virginia Tech Hokies, mascot is either the Hokie Bird or Gobbler, depending on who you ask.  Basically, a big turkey.

The story behind it is long, and not particularly interesting.  As a matter of fact, it is not remotely interesting, barely interesting, or even politely interesting.  It is so uninteresting, I am going to email the university and suggest they create a better legend.
