Title: Aisle or Window - Airplane Seat Preference?
Post by: dystopia on December 10, 2007, 03:54:19 PM
I was boarding a crowded plane yesterday and I was amused by the weird social interaction that happens between strangers that are forced to spend several hours crammed up against each other.

Funny things from the look of horror that flashes across people's faces as I made a shoulder feint toward their row (I'm not a small person) to the choice some make whether to get out to let the inside person in or just sit there and force them to do the awkward dance of trying to climb over.

Anyway, I was wondering whether you all prefer aisle or window seats on a plane.

Heh, I rarely encounter empty rows these days. I tend to fly on busy days I guess.

I was traveling with a friend one time and he asked an old lady in a middle seat in another row if she'd mind switching seats with him (he had a window seat, the old lady was sitting next to a very attractive woman)  She refused, though. An interesting, although overt approach.  I'm not sure if he's ever been successful.

As a kid, the window, for obvious reasons.  As an adult the aisle for sure.  Easier to move around, and better access to the drink cart.  ( I don't fly well, and only do it @ 5 SST)

Window.  Trying to figure out the magic formula re: aircraft and configuration to find a row with a nice, between the windows flat spot upon which I lean my head and sleep.

First class.  8)

Domestic flights I'll take the window. When I go international I like the aisle for reasons stroh mentioned. I can get up without bothering anyone. But....I do like leaning against the side for sleeping.

Rarely do you encounter empty rows anymore. But on the occasion when the seat(s) next to you is empty it is great.

I prefer window but if traveling with the wife I will always get the isle. One trip we took from Chicago to Dallas we were on a 777. Big f'n plane. It was about 1/4 full. I took an entire middle row, 5 seats. Just spralled out and slept.

Back in '98, the wife and I took a direct flight from SFO to CDG, and it was on a 777. We did the same dealie with the empty seats. Couldn't do it on the flight back because the flight was almost full, and on top of that I had one of the worst red wine-induced headaches of my life.  >:(

Never had a reason to fly.  Probably the window seat since I like scenery so much.

You'd better be E-A-G-L-E-E-Y-E if you plan on catching much scenery at 35K feet.   ;)

Aisle: more room to stretch my legs, easier access to the bathroom (which is important when you've got a bladder the size of a Brazil nut), makes de-planing a bit (though just) easier.

Once you're in the air, there's not much to see out the window anyway.

Aisle -- a little more room, no in-curving fuselage, and easier ingress/egress without disturbing row-mates.

Tip #1: if traveling with a companion, book the aisle and window seats, then pray that no one takes the unappealing middle seat.  Supposedly, it increases the chance that the two of you will get the row to yourselves.

Tip #2: check out www.seatguru.com for the dirt on the best/worst seats on any plane in the major carriers' fleets.

I used to always book the aisle seat - was not good at sleeping on planes, so I'd opt for the additional room and easy access to the can.  2 years into a 4 year stretch of a lot of plane time, I converted to the window seat.  I'm out cold before the beverages start rolling.

I always try and snag an emegency exit seat, so I don't care if it's the aisle, middle, or window.

However my pet hate is sitting next to the fat bloke or the fat chick ;)

Since first class is not financially within reach, I usually beg for the first row, aisle seat.  Being taller than average, and larger than average, makes seating on transport vehicles a bit of a challenge.

Previously, my preference for aisle bordered on the militant.  I'd be, like, "well find me another damn light that has damn aisle seats remaining."

But lately I've become a window guy.  I make it a point to empty my bladder, and evacuate my bowels-if necessary-immediately before boarding a flight, so as to have no reason to "get up".  Naturally, I try to limit consumption of caffeinated beverages well before a flight, if possible, and I NEVER consume alcoholic beverages in-flight, unless its a Friday evening trip.

However, on longer flights, such as overseas or to the left coast, I'll take the aisle.  Unless I'm in first class, when it really doesn't matter.

I hope my reply has been useful for the purposes of this thread.

On my flight out last week, I was on a plane that had a very cool headrest that you could bend into a U-shape that kind of supported your head to the side. I hadn't seen that before.  I slept well on that flight, but not so much on the return flight on a different type of plane.  I have a travel neck pillow but rarely take it with me.

I was looking through the SkyMall catalog and was tempted to order one of these inflatable airplane pillows. (although there's a slight, disturbing resemblence to "The Liberator")

Aisle, but its not a big preference - I'm a shrimp and can fit anywhere.

Do not get the row in front of the emergency row (or the first emegency row if there are two) - the seat will not recline to keep the exit row from being blocked in any manner.

And if I'm going to sleep, the back of the plane is just fine - the turbines provide a nice drowning out of other noises.... and helps conceal any snoring I may do.

I see the majority of people here sleeping or wanting to sleep.  I've never been able to sleep on a plane.

Other than obvious overseas dealies, aren't most flights like 90 minutes?  Is it worth trying to sleep?

It took a while to get used to sleeping on a flight, but after a while it becomes quite easy - even on a 90 minute flight.  One time I was headed from the twin cities to home (STL), fell asleep while we were taxiing to the runway prior to takeoff and didn't wake up until the wheels touched down in STL.  Best flight evar!

When you live in Utah it's four hours to anywhere.

I have a hard time sleeping on domestic flights without "sedatives".  ;)

It also seems that right about the time I nod off somebody elbows me, puts their chair back into my knees, etc....

Fetal position much?

I previously was unable to sleep on planes.  I can now, but it bothers my neck.  On an overnight flight, I'd try for the window seat and wedge my head between the seat and the plane's interior wall.  Any other flight, though, I just read, daydream, work, or satisfy a testicular self-examination obligation.
