Title: Well I had an interesting few weeks
Post by: Walfredo on March 06, 2008, 01:22:05 PM
I haven't been around much the last couple of weeks due to some issues.  Two weeks ago my son was sick with a really bad virus.  He couldn't keep anything down so we had to take him to the hospital.  He was very dehydrated to the point of hypoglycema (sp?).  So they put him on an IV for two days.  He is now doing very well and back to his normal self.

Last weekend a slipped a disk in my back.  I was home from work as just sitting in a chair was too painful.  I'm still in some pain and discomfort 11 days later but I'm back to work.

Since I make 99% of my posts from work I wasn't on the board much at all and have been playing catch up.

Well yesterday the bill from the hospital came.  Granted this is the bill that you see prior to them filing the insurance.  Which I "brilliantly" switched to the higher deductible PPO plan at the beginning of the year.

$10,800   [sm_shock] [sm_banghead] :lolspit: :punchballs:

This is for two days in the hospital, some basic tests, IV fluids, etc.  On the bright side our deductible is now taken care of.  All said in done we will be down about 4 thousand or so.  Of course my son's health has no pricetag, but damn this is going to hurt.  So much for a plasma this year.   :sad3:  Not sure when I'll be able to play golf.  At least not for a few more weeks.

Get healthy man. Dont worry about golf. Take your time. Back injuries are nothing to fool around with. I know. Golf is not a good sport for bad backs. Neither is picking up children but nothing you can do about that.

Like I said take your time. Don't rush anything.

Really glad to hear about your son. It's rough when your kid is sick in the hospital.

glad to hear that everyone is better.  Sorry to hear about that cost.  Do you have an HSA or FSA account set up to help offset the cost of the $4k?

cheer up man.... seems cheap to me.   [sm_shock] (j/k) when i went down in dec 04 with a nasty flu/whatever and got dehydrated and it spread to inflammation of the heart  blah blah  it was 3.5 days and over $21k    AND THAT's in 2004  dollars (so like $42k today)!
 [sm_rolling]

but seriously, glad everything worked out ok except for the unfortunate bill

Glad your son is okay.

I thought you were a young guy, have you always had back problems, or this is the first time.

Thanks but I opted to not do the HSA or FSA this year.  Since we only have one income right now with my wife in school I wanted as much of my paycheck as possible.  Fortunately the higher deductible PPO is pretty much free, so I'm saving about 4 k in premiums by not doing the low deductible PPO or HMO.  So by the end of the year, out of pocket costs will still be similar assumming no other major illnesses.  And we have savings to cover us for now.

I'll be 28 this April and this is my first back injury.  I think a number of things contributed to it.  Staying in the hospital for two nights.  Carrying my drunk wife up the stairs.  And my 29 lb son wanting to be held all the time when he was sick.  Finally it snapped when I put him down for bed over the railing of the crib.

Thanks for all the well-wishes and advice everyone.  I'll take er easy.

Glad to hear everyone's back on the mend.

And your kid is almost 30 pounds and still sleeps in a crib?  *Humid grotto*.

I used to have a lot of back pain when the kids were young from lifting and carrying them all the time.

The pain migrated to the shoulder and elbow from pitching to them all the time.

These are small costs we pay for the privilege of passing our genetic heritage on to succeeding generations of humanity.

What........................you didn't have maids and servants to carry around your children. :o :o :o

We're nouveau, hiring maids and servants to do the estate grounds, and to do the dust inside.

Wet nurses are exclusively "old money" around here --they'd no sooner let a nouveau infant suckle on their tit than they'd answer the door knowing an immigration officer has knocked.

He is only 16 months old.  But he does sleep on a cot in daycare so I suppose he could.  But my lazy dumbass would have to figure out how to turn his crib into the toddler bed.   [sm_scratch]
