That's funny.... A few years back I was talking to one of the "brothers" in a bar in Manhatten.

We got talking about that Cuban kid that was found floating of Florida in an inner tube, and how the first thing they did was take him to Disney Land. There was a news article about him with a photo of him on that tea cup ride.

WTF is the fascination with that tea cup ride??

Cool, there's enough initial interest to move this forward.  Let's do it.  We can recruit stragglers later.

I'll put up a $50 prize via paypal for first place.  There are no points for second place.*

Id be in. Would we do a live draft? If so when?

Would you prefer a live draft?  Another option is auction.

I'm looking at using one of these sites that offer free leagues:

http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/
http://games.espn.go.com/ffl/welcome/createleague?campaign=ff08&source=in_fp_create
http://football.sportsline.com/splash/football/spln/single/free?source=MKTG_FFBF08_FSPOEFP&refcode=FFBF08_FSPOE
http://msn.foxsports.com/fantasy/football/commissioner

If anyone has any preferences on the format, speak up.

Tea cups no. Looking at all the legal age women yes. Actually getting on the intertubes here is very hard, even with my phone. In fact that has been the only time I have. Hence the short a quick post.

Dys,

I have never done auction. I have done auto draft and live draft. I have used Yahoo so that is probably a good option, it seemed to be well organized. In fact I liked it better then Sportsline.

Post by: hobbit on August 07, 2008, 06:26:26 AM
Yahoo is really nice, but the live draft options for Sportsline are much better than Yahoo.  I prefer a live draft myself.

Yahoo will make everyone be there at the same time and places time limits on you.  Sportsline (in baseball anyway) lets you draft at your own pace - over several days if you want.  Not sure about ESPN or Fox.

Title: Re: Fantasy Football?
Post by: dystopia on August 07, 2008, 09:36:13 AM
Great, let's do a live draft.  I'll check out Sportsline and Yahoo more closely.  I like the idea of spreading the draft over a couple of days vs. needing everyone there at one time.

Title: Re: Fantasy Football?
Post by: dystopia on August 07, 2008, 03:37:29 PM
OK, I checked out both yahoo and sportline, and they're pretty comparable.  Unfortunately, sportsline doesn't offer a spread out, multi-day draft for football and has the same format as yahoo (you have to be online at that time or they draft from your list/ranking).

So I decided to go with yahoo.

Here's how to join:
1. Go to http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1
2. click the "Join League" button and follow the links to "Join a Custom League".
3. When prompted, enter the League ID# and password below.

League ID#: 344403
Password: [sent via PM]

I'll PM the password to everyone that expressed interest or posted in this thread (except spacey who declined)  That would put us at the limit of 10 people unless someone drops out.

Just a reminder, $50 prize to first place, free to enter.

Oh yeah, I went with all the default scoring formats to keep things simple.

I picked a random date for the Draft Day anticipating having to change it.  Once we get everyone signed up we can figure out when to hold the draft.

Cool.  Passwords sent to gleek and 'fredo.

Oh yeah, the reason having the password wasn't meant to make it a pain to sign up and exclude members.  In the past for some of our contests, we've had random lurkers enter since the link to join didn't require a password.  Since we've only got 10 spots, I figured it'd be more fun to beat up on people we know vs. random strangers.

The games start on THU, SEP 4.

The draft has to be scheduled sometime before Sept. 1.  Our draft date has yet to be finalized.  If you can't make it online during the draft, it's ok, Yahoo will autodraft for you from a player order you've specified or their default draft order.

No need!  Apparently, I was completely wrong on the league being limited to 10 players.  Thus starts my reign as worst.commish.ever.  :-[

Anyway, it looks like a league can have any of the following number of players:
4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20

I just bumped the number of players up to 12.  Will send password/link to join to kobesobe next. 8)

I hadn't thought about it.  Random seems fair.  Or are you talking about the 30 minute dealie.  I'm not sure I can change that.

Draft Pick Order
X *Random Order, Snaking (Standard
Order will be automatically set 30 minutes prior to draft. Team with first pick of Round 1 will be last pick of Round 2.

*Custom Order and Keeper League Players
Set the draft order, choose snaking or non-snaking, assign keeper player selections to any team in any round.

leagues I've played in we had set the draft order and posted it a couple weeks ahead of time  allows people time to plan a little. Also allows people to trade draft picks. We could try the random pick 30 min before. Puts all on level field as far as prep time which in most cases is none anyway.

And with Aske being so good he should be handicapped by being the last pick. [sm_devil]

Hmm, I poked around a little and it looks like I can set a custom draft order, but I don't see a way to trade draft picks.  I'll look at their help section some more, but I'm leaning toward taking the path of least effort and going with the yahoo default setting (30 min. random).

OK, we've got 12 players now, we should try to nail down a draft day/time.

6. stroh
7. spanky
8. twoiron
9. teed
10. walfredo
11. darla
12. kobesobe

This is going to be tricky to find a day/time that accommodates everyone, so let's see if we can figure something out.

I picked a random day/time to throw out there, but I suspect it's not an ideal time.  If you think it should be earlier or later or a different day, suggest it and we'll keep iterating until we find a suitable date/time.

How about:
Wed Aug 20 5:30pm Pacific/8:30pm Eastern

It's been a long day. Took my daughter shopping and now I can't think straight.

It's all good. 7:30 CDT is just fine with me. Thanks dys!

As this season goes along, if you have any suggestions on changing the format/scoring for next year, let me know.

I've seen some other scoring formats that look interesting:
- flex player (WR or RB)
- 1 pt for reception
- 1 pt bonus for passing > 300yds or rushing/receiving > 100yds

Just something to keep in mind.

Title: Re: Fantasy Football?
Post by: gleek on September 07, 2008, 10:39:31 AM
1 point per reception is a joke. We adopted that rule in the money league that I'm in, and I hate it. This week, Plaxico Burress picked up 23 points without scoring a single TD. What a joke!

Title: Re: Fantasy Football?
Post by: Walfredo on September 07, 2008, 05:32:20 PM
flex player is fine but no points per reception.  That is bs.  The 1pt bonus for a good game is cool though.

I may have a dispute already with the current point system. Or at least Yahoo's software. It's showing my TE, Utecht, at -1 due to a fumble. I can't find him fumbling in any box score I've looked at.  [sm_shock]

I'm trying the strategy of "completely overreacting to the results of week 1 and dismantling my team".

Some really close games this week. A couple of 1 pointers and a couple of 4 pointers. And I would have beaten everyone else in the league except the team I was playing - dystopia. Or as I like to call him, Mr. Waiver Wire.  [sm_cussing]   ;)

But I'm still in first place beyotches!

Yeah, some crazy, close games this week!  And now we've got a logjam with most of the league at 2-2.  ;D

I sucked in the draft (C. Palmer, L. Maroney, M. Bulger), so I need all the waiver wire help I can find.  The funny thing is that I'd probably have 3 more transactions this week, but Walfredo's been beating me to the punch.  ;D

I really hate FANTASY FOOTBALL. I am in two leagues, I know who really cares, but I am losing in this other league I am in, but Hines Ward just got a touchdown so now I am not getting killed as much as I was. The problem is now Pittsburg is winning so my pick-em pull is down by one unless Jacksonville can pull one out of their butt in the next minute and a half. Also, it really sucks to have one player in one league that helps you, but to play that same player in another league and it helps defeat you.  :sad3:

So in our league things are fine, the other one darla and I are in with our family I am done.

Delhomme - 240 yds/3 Int/ 0 tds = 0 points
Addai - 3yds injured = 0 points
McFadden nothing
Edwards - Injured questionable

And I traded away Manning.

I am the sukk!

Whoever I'm playing next will have a huge game from a WR.  :)

That being said I am curious about Defensive scoring. I think I should have 1 point from my defense. I know that interception/fumble returns for TD's do not go against points allowed for a defense.

TB blocked a punt for a TD. I don't get how this gets charged to the Panthers "D". Seems like it should be treated the same. Oh well.

Of course one less fumble by Peterson or if SD doesn't give up worthless yards to Cassel at the end of the game or Stokley doesn't get a concussion or.................

That's interesting.  I hadn't looked into how the defensive scoring works.  So special teams scoring is included when you have a team's defense.  They should make that clearer.  I also didn't realize that all PATs are counted, I had expected the PAT to count only if the TD counts.

Quote
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/football/scoring/football-75.html
Q. Why is the "Points Allowed" category for a defense different than the final score?

A. In Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Football, scoring for the Points Allowed category in leagues using Team Defenses include the following situations:

   1. All TDs scored against the defense.
   2. All FGs scored by the opponent.
   3. All PATs (Extra Points and 2-PT conversions).
   4. Special Teams Scoring (kickoff and punt returns for touchdowns, as well as blocked punts returned for TDs).
   5. All other scoring categories chosen within the league.

Please Note: Points scored against the team's offensive unit (e.g., interception and fumble returns for TDs, FG blocks returned for Touchdowns, and safeties) are not counted in the Points Allowed category.

72 points is more than what half the teams mustered so far this week and it looks like only 4 will be 80+. Down week for the scoring.

So much in fantasy depends on the luck of the schedule - who you play when/byes/etc. And guys like 2i who start players on their bye week.  [sm_devil]   The points I had in my previous loss would have beaten every other team. It is what it is I guess.

Rams' Jackson to be game-time decision (thigh)
Steelers to deactivate WR Holmes (marijuana)

Luckily Laveranues Coles' status changed from questionable to probable. (concussion)  ;D

Agreed but I'll use my W-L theory. W's matter in real life, points in FF. He'll be a higher pick in next year's draft.

(And I could argue that Fitzgerald, Boldin, Breaston and Warner take much more attention from defenses than Collins, etc. at Tennessee)

Brady Quinn, QB CLE
News: Quarterback Derek Anderson has been benched by the Browns, who will start popular backup Brady Quinn on Thursday night against the Broncos. The switch was confirmed Monday by the team, just hours after coach Romeo Crennel said he had no plans to make a change. Anderson, who has been inconsistent this season, threw a costly interception that was returned for a touchdown in the final minutes of Sunday's 37-27 loss to the Ravens in Week 9. Anderson has struggled to maintain a completion percentage of even 50 percent this year and has nine touchdowns and seven interceptions, failing to perform like he did in his breakout 2007 season.

Derek Anderson gets benched and Kyle Orton is gone with an ankle injury.  Suddenly I'm without a QB.

Yikes!  There's going to be quite a battle for the playoffs.  Most teams are still in contention.

It's not fair for the leaders to change it this year, but does anyone have any preference between a 4 team playoff vs. a 6 team playoff next year? (assuming a 12 team league again)

This article has some interesting points on a FF league's playoffs:

http://www.fftoday.com/articles/shutters/08_cc_wk10.htm
Quote
When setting up your league’s playoff format (assuming the typical single elimination tournament that most leagues use) the first thing you’ll want to establish is the number of teams involved. Most leagues involve six teams in their playoffs. This creates a simple three-week bracket where the top two teams get byes into the second round. While this is a very standard format, (it’s what I use in my 14-team league), is it the best format for identifying your league champion?

There are a couple of things you may want to consider before adopting this format. The majority of fantasy football leagues are either 10 or 12 team leagues. If you use this format in these size leagues you are allowing 50% – 60% of your league to qualify for the playoffs. Kind of NBA/NHL-ish as far as playoff participation goes. The NFL allows just over a third (12 of its 32) of its teams into the playoffs. Even in 12 team leagues you could easily be looking at teams with .500 records or worse, qualifying for your post season. Certainly the playoffs are exciting and having a majority of your owners qualify keeps interest high throughout the regular season. However you have to offset that with the fact that in a single elimination format, one bad week can take out the best of teams.

Do you really want to give owners of mediocre teams a shot at your league title? This comes down to personal preference and I think six teams in a 14-team league give you a quality post season. I think the number for 10-team leagues should be four teams. Any more than that guarantees you to have a below average team in your playoffs. 12-team leagues fall in the middle, you could make the argument for either, though I lean toward the six-team size because it makes your regular season more interesting and keeps more teams alive for the playoffs until the last weeks of the season.

Now that we’ve determined how many teams will participate in your post season, how do we determine who they’ll be? Typically, overall record is used to determine your playoff teams, however many leagues are reserving a playoff spot based on total points. This makes sense when you consider that a team’s won/loss record often has as much to do with luck in scheduling as it does with the actual team’s performance. How many times have you been that team that scored the second highest amount of points in your league for the week and lost the game? Adding a playoff position for a total points champion is a good way to ensure the best teams qualify for the playoffs. My league reserves the final wildcard for the highest scoring team that hasn’t qualified on overall record.

He really does. I won't pick a Denver RB for this reason.

Last week Scheffler comes back from a groin injury. I don't start him just because he is still not 100% (allegedly) but catches 4 for 92 yards. Good.

I start him this week and he gets nothing. nada. zilch. Something called Nate Jackson catches 3-32 and Daniel Graham catches 1-9 and, of course, a TD.

this season reminds me why I quit playing FF  a few years ago

#1 pick hurt and  playing at #2 RB level at best

#1 WR pick had allpro QB throwing to him hurt in week 3

#1 QB pick  gets hurt and plays like it all season-- slightly better than #2 QB level .

#2 RB goes on IR at midpoint of season

Kicker on team with allpro QB hurt in week 3, never gets on the right half of the field to score.

Only bright spot, landing a good kicker at week 12, scoring a great #2 wideout midseason, and picking an awesome DEF unit.
