I just want something to put in the car to tell me when to turn right and stuff like that. I'm inclined to go with a Garmin something or other (since I use a Garmin eTrex Venture for backpacking and I like it) but have no intimate knowledge of the products offered and by whom. Suggestions/advice appreciated.

You could use it in a car (I have), but it's probably not ideal compared to other units out there. Garmin is widely regarded as the user-friendliest GPS on the market. Make sure you think about whether you need an internal battery, as some are not so equipped.
