Title: Anyone interested in a whale of a shot? Post by: geo1 on January 28, 2008, 10:03:50 AM Got back from 2 week stay in Kona last Wednesday. Used Nikon D200 Nikkor 70 200 zoom lens and autofocus. I ain't good enough to use manual on a bouncy boat and rolling ocean. Have a series of comin up and returning (7 shots I think) on another whale if anyone is interested.

Picture taken from severely rolling boat out towards ocean and my best guess is about 500 yards. Photo was enlarged on computer, but shot was still clear enough to get close detail of even the eye of the whale.

Trust me, I know PRECISELY how great these are. I once went out on a whale watching boat in Hawaii with a decent camera w/telephoto lens etc and so forth, armed and desperate for the 'perfect pic'. But as luck would have it, the boat captain was one of those tree hugging greenpeace hippies who refused to get the boat too close to the whales "for their own safety" still, the complementary mai tai's were breathtaking Title: Re: Anyone interested in a whale of a shot? Post by: Walfredo on January 29, 2008, 10:33:01 AM Nice pics. While we were in Hawaii the Mrs and I took a chartered boat that did snorkeling. It was in early April so the whales were still around. A couple got within 30-40 feet of our boat. They were amazing. I must have used an entire roll on them but didn't get any pictures near that good.

I know I was just pumped while taking these shots. My buddy and his wife were on the boat with me and wife. He uses CANON with Canon 300 zoom lens. Buddy and his wife were just bummed and almost angry during the trip. Turns out his Canon could not react fast enough to capture any of the shots. I guess the wife was upset with equipment failure to. Told my buddy that it was ok because supposedly it happens to all guys????
