The Green Bay Packers, unable so far to trade Brett Favre and facing his arrival at training camp, are reportedly considering taking a step they desperately wanted to avoid: dealing him to a division rival.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, citing a source close to the situation, on Wednesday reported the Packers were considering seeking a deal with one of their rivals, most likely the Minnesota Vikings or Chicago Bears, if all else fails.

That follows reports that the Packers on Wednesday offered Favre a substantial sum of money -- as much as $20 million over several years -- to stay retired.

$20M to stay retired! Another  [sm_shock]

Are they really that afraid of a Viqueens + Favruh combo (especially since it's going to be for no more than a season)? If they can snag a 2nd round pick from which ever division rival he goes to, they would be weakening their rivals in future years when Rodgers might have a better chance of making some noise.

they want him to go in the division so they can tee off on him twice.  ;) ;D

Funny enough, that seems to be the popular question.

If you're(G.B.) so confident that going forward with Rodgers is what you want and Favray is only a back up, the send him to MN or Chicago, and beat him down.

We'll see if they have the balls.

I agree with the above. If Thompson/McCarthy are firmly in the Aaron Rodgers era then they shouldn't care where Favre plays.

I reeeaaaally don't get the "here's $20M to stay retired" rumor. Are you kidding? Save the money, get a good draft pick(s) from Chicago or Minnesota and don't worry about it. Especially Chicago. Tom Brady or Peyton Manning wouldn't do squat there this year.

I think the powers that be in Green Bay are scared *feces*less of Minnesota stomping the Pack twice with Favre and then going deep in the playoffs and having to answer why they just didn't bring Brett back.

Yahtzee.

I also have to wonder if Goodell told them they don't want the MNF to be a circus spectacle.
Jersey retire, Favre running out in purple, G.B. loss, rioting in the stands, etc.

Fuzzy keeling over from pure giddiness..................

Seriously, how good would that be? It might be the highest rated MNF game ever. Except I heard the jersey retirement is all but off no matter where Favre goes. It would definitely be a media circus (at least around here).

I'd read Tampa Bay was interested in him.  I guess that's dead ... ?

If GB was willing to toss $20 million to keep him retired, they should be willing to deal him to CHI for a pittance.  Maybe the same monetary loss, and he goes to a team that shouldn't harm them too much.

Update to the update:

Quote
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The word "irony" gets thrown around too often, but it's hard to apply a more appropriate term for the position the Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre find themselves in Thursday morning.

The Vikings, of all teams, might represent the only option for the Packers and Favre to salvage any dignity in a standoff that is growing into an unmitigated disaster.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel accurately captured a feeling that has been building around the NFL for a few days: If the Packers remain steadfast in their refusal to release Favre, they will have to consider trading him to the team of his choice -- the Vikings -- or else face the unprecedented disruption of having Favre crash training camp.

While unorthodox and perhaps counterintuitive, a trade at least allows the Packers to get something in return for Favre and take a draft pick or two from their division rivals. Releasing Favre outright, while cleaner, would allow him to sign with the Vikings for nothing.

It is almost common knowledge that Favre wants to play for the Vikings, and it's part of the reason why the Packers filed tampering charges against Minnesota earlier this month. What is not clear, and has not been discussed enough publicly, is whether the Vikings are 100 percent interested in acquiring him.

Quote
If they can get past those competitive juices, the Packers will realize Favre probably isn't going to consider reporting to a team other than the Vikings. (According to news reports, he hasn't been willing to discuss terms with either the New York Jets or Tampa Bay Buccaneers.)

Assuming they come to that realization, the Packers and Vikings would have to work out a compensation package that could incorporate a resolution to the tampering case as well. One person we talked to suggested the Packers could be enticed by an offer of a third-round draft pick and tailback Chester Taylor. But we have a hard time believing the Vikings would part with Taylor, even though they would be protecting their backup running back at the possible expense of getting a new starting quarterback.

More likely, the deal would have to include one or more draft picks. The Vikings would be motivated by the desire to get Favre into camp, while the Packers would recognize the time had come to end their summer of turmoil.

if you actually needed taylor at some point you could hire someone respectable (in terms of capability compared to him) off the waiver wire.
