Title: What Music do you Like, That your Parents Used to Play.
Post by: Jules on May 26, 2009, 06:47:45 PM
Nothing my Dad Liked, he loved Slim Dusty, I can't stand him.

Mum's taste was a little different, and I have been known to buy CD's of these artists, remembering how I used to love singing along with them.

Nancy Sinatra
Charley Pride
Glen Campbell
Dean Martin
Englebert Humple*8==>*.

Come on everybody, fess up. ;D

You mean besides the inevitable standard of Mary Hopkin and Mungo Jerry?  [sm_anon]

My list starts and ends with The Beatles.  Plus (for now)...

Simon and Garfunkel
The Kinks
Joe Cocker
Donovan
Procul Harum
Cream
Buffalo Springfield (--> many of the fifty-seven acts that are their legacy)
Van Morrison

* I've only included music I've actually bought.  For some reason I've never bought any Elvis or he'd be on there.

My Parents graduated HS in 76 and my Dad has an extensive classic rock cd/album collection.  So I like a lot of the same stuff now.

The Beatles, Van Morrison, Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits, The Police, Clapton, Little Feat, Gov't Mule, Allman Bros, etc.

I always hated the eagles and CSNY though.

Music was forbidden in my house when I was a youth, My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Nebraska with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old Colorado prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, and he would drink, he hated any sort of syncopated rhythm. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in California, luge lessons in winter. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it.

Ahh yes, Slim Dusty.... a classic line from a classic song:

"There's nothing more grusome, morbid or drear, when you get up the barmaid and she's got gonorrhea"

My parents were completely un-hip.  Not much music in our house at all.

From my dad, Elvis was about the only thing I could stand - the rest was sorry arse country, no upbeat stuff at all.  My mother really had no music at all.

Lots, but then again, my musical tastes are a bit eclectic.

Herb Alpert
Henry Mancini
Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, et al.
Johnny Cash
Loads of late 50s singles (nascent rock-n-roll)

Is nascent rock-n-roll the one with bagpipes?
