Title: Grandpa Uisce
Post by: Uisce Beatha on April 01, 2007, 04:05:50 PM
Went to a brew pub today.  First time in a long time at this particular place.  It's so hip now and I'm such an old man.  (Squatters, Spacey)

Utah liquor law strangeness.  You can't order a bar drink if you're sitting at the bar.  You have to be seated in the "restaurant" section.  That one's new to me.  I'm not a big bar sitter.  What a crack up though.  I was literally five feet away from about $4000 dollars worth of liquor and couldn't order any.  Couldn't even order the IPA as they didn't have it on draft and the bottles are 6.0%

Fancy six foot tall tubes full of beer with a little tap at the bottom.  I guess they're the new pitcher.  All I could think about was how nasty that last draw would be.  Pints are meant to go from the keg to the glass to my tummy.  I'm not into middlemen when it comes to my cerveza.

They had "waterless urinals" too.  Little sign tells you that they save one million gallons of water per year just in that building.  Nothing (in print anyway) acknowledging the restroom smells like piss.  Can't have it all I guess.

One last thing.  Girls dress REALLY *trollop*ty these days.  What their daddies must be thinking.   :tears:

LOL. I also discovered the cocktail/IPA paradox at Squatters not too long ago. Makes no *goshdarn* sense at all. Then again, our liquor laws are being written by people who don't drink, so how would they know?

Did you check out the new setup upstairs? I had no idea they expanded, until we were directed that way last time we ate there (about a month ago) because the downstairs was full. It's quite nice up there. I was disappointed to find they no longer serve bangers and mash (or at least it's not on the menu anymore). The jambalaya is pretty good though.

I didn't go into the restroom, but I've experienced those waterless urinals before, they're scattered around the campus at the U. They do stink but I guess when you think about it it makes good ecological sense. Still nowhere near as gross as the trough one had to pee in when I used to go to concerts at the state fairgrounds.

This post brought to you by the Random Stream of Consciousness Society of America.

Didn't make it upstairs although I saw the stairs when I tried to go down to the restrooms.  Ending up having to take an elevator.  Elevator to the jacks in a pub!!  :o ???  LOL.  This is definitely not the Dead Goat.   ;)

Squatters' jambalaya is great.  It's what I always get when I eat a meal there.  Just appetizers and a couple of pints after golf today.  I actually wanted the IPA, it's easily their best brew IMO, but the ABC Board/Tabernacle Choir got me.

Werd on the IPA. I also quite like the Full Suspension Pale Ale, though there are better pale ales. We drink Full Suspension a lot though because PAs are my favorite (the hoppier the better) but Laura doesn't really like most of them, except FS.

Wasn't that a nice story?

I'm having trouble picturing these tubes.  Do they bring them to the table, sort of like a mega-yard glass?  Or are they mounted at the bar with a tube coming from a keg to display the color?

Once the shockwave loads click on "Beer".  There's a quick glimpse of one in the first photo of the rotation.

It's basically a clear or smokey plastic tube.  Probably 3" in diameter.  It might not be 6' tall but it's a good 3-4'.  At the bottom there's a tap right in the tube.  The tube itself sits on some sort of a heavy base to keep it upright.  Simply gravity fed deal.

I figure there are a least a gallon and a half in there though.  You'd want to have a good few friends helping you out or a cast iron stomach for that final pint.

Yes, they bring them out to the table.  No connection to the bar at all.

Heh, took me a while for shockwave to load on their site, and I come back and spacey puts a better pic here.  ;D

Interesting device. I've never even heard of something like that before.

I've seen those at the brewpub in the Monte Carlo in Vegas.  I'll take a fresh pour, thank you.

You guys have me wanting to sneak out of work and go grab a pint.

WTF is wrong with an old-fashioned pitcher?  How do you clean those things?

Years ago my wife and I spent a couple of days in SLC and I remember some of  the liquor laws were pretty weird.  It was a long time ago so I don't recall exactly, but there was something about buying your bottle outside the restaurant and bringing it into the restaurant in a paper bag.

Wow, it's been a while. Brown bag laws have been dead for quite a long time. In fact,  you can no longer purchase a mini-bottle in Utah.

I remember those days though.  Crazy stuff.  People walking into posh restaurants in evening wear carrying a bottle in a bag like a wino.  Too funny.
