Title: Impersonation accounts - love 'em or leave 'em?
Post by: admin on January 02, 2007, 10:33:43 AM
There are a couple of "members" being impersonated here, one more obvious than the other.  What do you guys think of this?  I tend to err on the side of leaving things be, but I wanted to see what people thought.

Frankly, I'm less bothered that these guys are being impersonated, than that they could be funnier, more overt, and scathing in their parodies. [sm_devil]

(I'll be off the forum for the next two hours driving to work, but I'll check this thread later.)

**edit, damn apostrophes [sm_mob]**

Can be confusing having to guess what members are really real. ;)

I would simply ask that they use "warn tags" for those kind of images
Thanks.

If anybody imitates me I'll jihad them so quick and mercilessly their necks will look like they are still attached to their heads.

I'm fine with them. I wasn't sure porkchop was the real deal until the "everyone hates me, my life sucks and it's everyone else's fault, jesus Akbar" post in stroh's christmas thread. Never had any doubts that our pnf is the real deal. It's so damn obvious.

It takes you two hours to drive to work? WTF?

They can be funny (funnier), but they can be mean-spirited, too.  Ultimately, I don't care.

It'd be nice if the person behind the impersonation could be visible (perhaps by clicking on something, so as not to ruin the illusion), to get his props (or not).

He was the first one here to extend a warm welcome to me [sm_bs]

Hmm, interesting voting so far. [sm_scratch]  I changed the poll to leave it open for 24 hours.

I've also said in the past that the karma feature is a nice tool to see how welcome people are around here, so feel free to let the applause/smiting fly if you feel strongly about one of the characters in question.  That could be interpreted as the real person or the impersonated person, I guess it doesn't matter.

This is a tough call because I feel that anarchy should prevail around here, but it makes it harder to recruit people to this site when the front page is full of the puttnfool/prokrop show (or even worse, caricatures of them).  It may give a newbie the wrong impression of this place.

Is prokrop really fake?  And it's just impossible to imagine a kinder, gentler puttnfool.  Hell, it's hard to imagine the real puttnfool....

I guess some characters are so bad, even their imitations should be banned.

This is getting old.  It isn't me.

Everytime some bizzaro character pops up on the internets (lars, kosovo, golfer0179201792, etc), wishicouldhither accuses moi.

It's all I can do to be who I am.

I wish I had the talent.  Really.  But my 'strengths' are in an entirely different place....anatomically speaking, of course, and I must nurture them.  For the sake of humanity.

I think karma is being used in a few different ways.  But now that people have to specify a reason, it's easier to tell which ones are jokes and which ones are serious.

I paypal $.50 to Butbackstagethingswerefal every time he hits me with positive karma. Unfortunately he's either canceled his account or changed his SN, so I'm afraid I'll be stuck at 25 forever.

Not often.  I only check when someone has a big karma swing to make sure it's legit.  I don't really like to login to the admin account, it makes me feel unclean.

I'm not sure if the html field has a limit, but the database field for description has a 255 character limit.

I don't mind fake personas, double account makers should be OK unless they are abusing karma or some crap.

I feel differently about the actual person fakes though.

I find them funny, well, I found one of them funny, once, one time, for a second.   ;D

The guys you mentioned on the front page can have a few effects, it depends how many you would call desired.

Someone who knows them already might see the names and think it's the real them and say 'well, fug that, I can't stand those dip*feces*s! this site is not for me' etc.

Similarly, someone might believe it is them and start conversing with them and continue to believe it's them even after what the rest of us can see as blatent rib tickling.  I think this is the area it could be harmful to the person being 'portrayed'.  Depends how much hate you have, I guess, I prefer to feel the love.   :P

A casual observer is very likely to think 'wtf is up with that site, ragging on those poor new guys like that?'  In my opinion, they would then be less likely to come out of lurk mode or make posts in that environment.

At the end of the day, I don't give a dog's sausage though, apathy rules.

I mean, anarchy rules!!!

I vote no on impersonation accounts, or at least impersonations of FGI members. If someone wanted to impersonate a famous real person, like Bill Bixby or Skeletor, I'd be ok with that.

Sheeeeeet.

It was a landslide, you lib.

And that's not accounting for the fake accounts that voted for themselves.

However, now that you have ruled against them, on your own, with no consultation, I want them back.

Viva la revolution, only if they do get to come back, make them funnier next time please.  Shouldn't be difficult.
