Title: Best burgers (non-homemade)
Post by: dystopia on January 15, 2007, 05:11:05 PM
lennyquai's post about In-n-Out got me thinking about burgers.

What would you rank as your top 3 (non-homemade) burgers?

You can go with chain stores, local joints, high-end places, doesn't matter.

This is pretty tough for me to come up with, it might take me a while.  Carl's Jr. makes a pretty good burger.  In-n-Out has dropped down the list.  Fuddruckers is always great.  I've had some legendary burgers at Fatburger in Vegas.

There's a great burger joint near UC Davis called Murder Burger.  (actually the name has changed to Redrum Burger recently).

Hmm, I've had some good burgers at Dairy Queen braizers, too.

What's your top 3?

When I lived In CA, I always liked:
In-N-Out
Giant Burger
The Original Hamburger Stand in Vacaville...10 bucks would feed me for a week

I remember Murder Burger, and liked their food.

All Local Joints:

Crown Burger (Owned by Greeks. Cheeboiga.)
Best Burger
Red Rock
Orbit Cafe

(There used to be a pool/arcade place named The Farmer's Daughter that made a burger called The Barn Buster that was killer, but much larger than any human being should consume in a single sitting.)

Geez, first TV shows and now this!  I'm afraid I don't eat hamburgers out very much, either.  I always try to order something I wouldn't normally eat at home.

Maybe I should just riff on eating at McDonalds the world over ... ?  [sm_devil]

Crown Burger (Owned by Greeks. Cheeboiga.)

Cooked by our Southern Brothers (to the south).

Excellent burgers for sure.  Crown Burger itself (piled with pastrami) is awesome.  Carl's can claim it all they want, Crown had it going 30 years ago.  Bacon cheese is awesome too.  They use high quality, thick sliced bacon.

Onion rings too.

Mmmmm, I'm hungry.  There's one about a mile from here.   :hungry:

none really.   most are mediocre and boring, especially if you're like me and don't want 'fixins'  on your burger

How do you make a non-mediocre and non-boring burger without "fixins?"

My disappointment with In-n-Out has been tempered by our discovery of Five Guys Burgers, www.fiveguys.com - incredible fries as well, who opened up a storefront 5 minutes or so from my house.

#2 - The Varsity (actually, the hamburgers suck, but I live in Atlanta)
#3 - Fuddruckers or Red Robin, I don't know

have one about 2 minutes from work.  never been inside, stinks outside (maybe it's just the local oakland stench)

If you're in the mood for a burger, try one.

Regular Burger = double
Jr. Burger = single

There storefronts and interiors don't bring people in (very bland on both fronts), but the food is good, when you're in the mood for a burger.  Our Friday evening family meals are sushi or mexican, so I don't get there too often.

I don't eat much beef, so I don't go around looking for the best burger joints.  But I will have a BBQ pork sandwich now and again.  My favorite place for that is Bono's Bar-BQ in Atlantic Beach, Florida.

Ha!  Small world.  I grew up there.  We used to go to Bono's all the time.

When my dad retired from the Navy in 1953 we settled in Jacksonville.  At that time there was only the original Lou Bono's BBQ place on Atlantic Boulevard (which had opened in 1949).  In 1980 Joe Adeeb bought the business and has expanded it into a small chain of 20 restaurants.  The one in Atlantic Beach is near my mother's home.  But I still remember going to Lou Bono's in the 1950s.  It was great pit barbeque.  Sadly, there is no Bono's in Miami where I currently live.

My local Fish and Chip shop makes a rockin burger... the great aussie tradition, the "Burger with the Lot":

Pattie
Cheese
Onion
Bacon
Lettuce
Tomato
Pineapple
Egg
Beetroot

 ;D ;D

There is NO best burger out in the marketplace anymore.

The trick is going to a butcher you can trust and asking for 75-80% lean ground sirloin.

I might be the only dude in Utah who digs beetroot.  Pickled (I buy the jar, dump the weak azz juice and replace with straight white vinegar) with cold chicken or tinned corned beef and plain potato chips.  It's my standard come-home-late-from-work-and-throw-something-together dinner.

But on a burger?

[sm_disgust] :o :o :o ;D

Made very similar burgers. We probably use 10-12 cloves of garlic in 24 oz. Excellent
