Title: NASCAR punk'd by ABC
Post by: Fuzzy on November 10, 2008, 05:29:32 PM
In fairness they did show the end of the race on ESPN2.

Just hit me in the seeds ABC (http://www.startribune.com/sports/motorsports/34222924.html?elr=KArksLckD8EQDUoaEyqyP4O:DW3ckUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aU7EaDiaMDCiUZ)

CHARLOTTE, N.C.  — It's been 30 years since a NASCAR driver won three straight championships. Yet, as Jimmie Johnson closed in on the mark, ABC cut away..............

Quote
ABC ditched its NASCAR coverage for "America's Funniest Home Videos" with 34 laps left in Sunday's race. That's right, Johnson's seventh win of the season was interrupted by cats running into walls, dancing brides falling and children inflicting unintentional pain on adults.

"I knew we were in trouble when I looked at the monitor and saw a monkey scratching its butt," one team member said after Johnson's victory.

Yep, the network that promised to broadcast the final 10 races of the season on ABC as part of its estimated $270 million a year contract dumped the closing laps of a championship Chase race for home video hijinks.

Nice "partner," NASCAR.

Weirdness.

I was listening to this on the radio tonight on the way home.  I walk in the door, and guess what they have on the tv?  (not ABC, but still.)

I grab a cold one, fire up the laptop, and open this thread.

I wonder if I got 10 grand coming my way.  Either that or some shot to the nuggets.

Also to be fair, there was a rain delay and 1 or 2 red flags, as well as a late start.

The race was also a snoozer, which is actually a little rare for Phoenix.

All that said, NASCAR's decline in popularity and resultant punking by ABC is nobody's fault but their own. The Chase is a dismal failure, the COT has only increased the difference between the 'Have' and 'Have Not' teams and made it very, very difficult for anybody not on a Roush, Childress or Gibbs team to break the top 10 any given week.

Add in dumbed down coverage that's almost universally awful between 3 networks, with only Brad Daugherty (Sp) coming across as any kind of insightful or intelligent, and it's tough to be a fan any more.
