Title: Outdoor hockey
Post by: Spanky on September 17, 2007, 03:15:50 PM
On Jan 1, Buffalo will host the Penguins to an outdoor game at Ralph Willson stadium (home to the Bills). That might be interesting to see. I know it's nothing new but this will be first NHL game played outside in the US. I know it's been done in Canada.

Yea, yea, yea, I know it's football season, who cares.

That's cool.

[slight threadjack] I wish I'd played hockey on the ponds/lakes that froze over when I was a kid.  We played a lot of street hockey, but it was always drilled into our heads to stay off the ice. (probably for good reason)

Why?

Seriously.

Something different. Huge crowds, lots of attention. They've done this a couple of times in the college game with big success:

74,000 plus partiers at the Michigan-Michigan St. game in 2001

Spartans (http://badgerherald.com/sports/2001/10/08/outdoor_hockey_game.php)

IIRC there were 50,000 plus at the "Frozen Tundra" last year for Wisconsin-Ohio St.

Badgers (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://images.usatoday.com/sports/_photos/2006/02/08/in-lambeau.jpg&imgrefurl=http://asp.usatoday.com/community/utils/idmap/13386053.story&h=180&w=180&sz=13&hl=en&start=18&um=1&tbnid=A8JyFxks0pO7aM:&tbnh=101&tbnw=101&prev=/images%3Fq%3Doutdoor%2Bhockey%2Bbadgers%2Bohio%2Bst.%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff)
