Title: At the risk of a smiting, I'll ask . . .
Post by: Charlie_Foxtrot on February 13, 2007, 12:19:01 AM
What exactly happened at FGI?

I was never a regular visitor, but from reading the posts here, it's clear there was an unfriendly exodus.  I did some searching here, and I've been able to piece together that people were unhappy with some aspects of the moderation, and maybe a bunch of other things, but that's about it.

Would anyone be willing to give a complete summary?

Nothing really happened.  It was just a normal transition.  A few folks got tired of the broken promises in regards to gifts that were never received after upgrading their membership.

Some folks felt that they were unfairly targeted by the mods.

People got tired of questions about FIG not being answered.

Some folks got tired of all the bickering and personal attacks on FIG.

Dystopia started this site as an outlet for those fed up w/ some of the things going on over there.

That's just my opinion, it's worth what you paid for.

To add one:

Some folks pined for the days of the smaller, more intimate forum where everyone knew everyone.  FGI has grown large enough that you can't get that dynamic there any more.

Teed summed it up pretty well for me. I haven't really left, just got a little tired of some of the things mentioned above.

I left 'cuz of that Persimmon character.  If that *fudge*er follows me here I'll retire to a life of ironing and stalking Randy Newman (not necessarily in that order).

Randy or Ryan Newman?

Corporate, white bread FGI leaves a little to be desired. I still post there, of course.

I'm waiting for 'Groups'...

Most of the reasons I've seen from people have been covered.  The only thing that might be missing could be that some folks didn't like the sponsor dramas that ruined the equipment section.  All the "you're a shill, he's a shill", "can't be honest and criticize a product from a sponsor or be mobbed", "why can one sponsor spam the forum, but others can't" bickering type of thing.

I certainly have not left FGI and I have not member as long as most people here, about 2 years 1000+ posts.

I feel the equpiment section comment from dystopia is right on, when I joined it was a wealth on infomation. It became a new advertising springboard and those with really good info kind of stopped posting.

Anyway, there is room in my life for both!

I still participate there, but find it just a bit too bland and corporate. They've just taken most of the fun and life out of it. I miss the raggedness of the past and look forward to having fun again. I get waaaaaay too much corporate bs in my everyday l;ife to want any more of it when visiting a golf website. Dystopia, thanks for creating a place for us to mutate to.  ;D

As others, I haven't completely left FIG.  But it's changed over the years, especially so since the sheriff has become mostly behind the scenes and doesn't post much anymore.  I don't mind the mods and other changes that have been made, but it's definitely lost some of the spontaneity.  That's not to say I don't like it over there.  But also most of the members that I felt I knew the most have moved on.  Not that I mind making new friends, but it's always nice to talk with friends of old.  I really like the smaller size of this forum and also how dystopia considers things mentioned in the help and suggestions.  He really wants this place to be as good as it can be.

Some of the mods are uptight, rainbow loving, libs that have no business being on a golf forum! That stroh dude is just odd, and in a bad Village People sort of way.

I gotta make my first post here.

As the others above have mentioned, FGI used to be more of a close-knit place where  most everyone was friendly (or at least civil), and you could ask any question, no matter how stupid. Granted, if the question was just pure idiocy, then you'd get flamed, but that was the way it was.

Now, it's gone all generic.

I still post there, but nowhere near as much as I used to. I'm lucky to make 2-3 posts a day now, as opposed to the 8-10 I did not too long ago.

A buddy of mine (Bordercollie - anyone remember him?) turned me on to GolfDiscussions, so I've been spending the majority of my time over there. The site is almost exactly the same format as this one. I've met (for the lack of a better term) a lot of people there that have extensive knowledge about all sorts of equipment, and have some pretty good inside information.

At least now I've got a third place to hang out, besides GD and FGI.

We flame idiocy here too, but we let aske decide what is idiotic and what isn't. (It was Stroh's job for a while, but we didn't know when we asked him that he drinks pretty much 24/7.) The biggest problem is that 95% of what goes on here is pure idiocy, which results in a lot of flaming. That's just how we roll.

At any rate, welcome.
