U.S. may host Premiership games
English league to announce plan for overseas matches

LONDON (AP) -- England's Premier League could be going global.

The league's 20 clubs agreed unanimously Thursday to examine proposals to expand the regular season and play 10 games overseas starting in 2010-11.

The matches would be played at five venues around the world over a single weekend in January 2011. Each city would host one game on Saturday and one on Sunday.................................

I call bull*feces*.  It'll never happen.

Which teams would even consider giving up their home fixture?

Although that seems rather definitive.   [sm_scratch]

Anyway, if it does happen and they come to SLC (they would I think given the new stadium) I'll be there.

edit: Ooops, should have read the whole thing.  Extra game so.  Hmmmmm.  How would that work?  Who plays whom?    [sm_scratch]

Still don't see this working.  Too many fixtures already not to mention the travel.  It's not like playing a Champions League match in Paris with an hour flight each way.

The players will go on strike or the teams will send B-sides.  Yet if these matches are meant to count in the EPL standings....?

I dunno.  Seems very stoopid to me.

They already complain about schedules, I just don't see this happening.

And given I don't live near LA or NYC, I'm not really caring much  :sad3:

If they come and play in Minneapolis they'll have their feet sucked on.

Just sayin'

The NFL hasn't done well in Europe.  I wonder if soccer will be equally popular in the USA.

NFL Europe was a joke but NFL USA is popular (in Ireland at least).  Anecdote: My uncle texted my cousin late in the game as we watched this year.  2:00 AM or later his time with no horse in the race.  The Irish are huge supporters of sport of any kind.  England much the same.  Might have something to do with the pub culture.   ;)

One EPL match per year in each of NY and LA. would be sold out in hours if United v. Chelsea or similar match-ups.  It might take a few days for Wigan v. Sunderland but those would sell out too.

But long term, week in and week out viability, probably not.   :sad3:
