Title: U.S. Open Darkhorse Contest and Bitch Session
Post by: Uisce Beatha on June 13, 2007, 03:40:53 PM
Alright, don't have any prizes in mind but perhaps we can come up with something.  Pick a player who is not ranked in the top 100 in the world to win the U.S. Open.  Posts must be submitted and not modified before first tee time Thursday morning.  Ties will be broken by something entirely whimsical and decidedly unfair.  I'll work on that.  If none of our picks win then we'll just throw a kegger with the entry fees.

I pick [edit: Errrrmmm, he's not in the field.  I'll have to work on this.  Might be a slim selction pool.  Stay tuned.  LOL.]

Awesome!  I'll contribute a prize of the book, Tour Tempo - Golf's Last Secret Finally Revealed.

Maybe to eliminate ties, you could have it so that once someone grabs a player, they're off the board.  That would also reduce procrastinating.

I still have plenty of golf balls to give away.  :sad3: I found even more today when I was cleaning my closet.

Hows 'bout a bakers dozen to the winner?

Damn, how did that just happen?

How about if none of our picks win, the winner is determined by the best finish among our sadsack peons.

And for the prize, I can't tell which is more desirable, so how about 1st place gets a choice between the tour tempo book and Seamus' baker's dozen of balls, and second place gets the prize that wasn't picked?

Sounds great.  I'll dig around the place a bit and see if I can find something to toss in the pool.

We still might have ties.  Maybe a scorecard tie-breaker if it comes to it?  Sunday score... Sat... Fri... Thurs.

Good call on the scorecard tie-breaker.  That should cover it.

I'm going with the last guy to win a PGA tour event using a wooden headed driver and a 10 finger grip (both of which I believe he's changed now), sort of a 'Grinders Grinder':

Bob Estes...

Whisker Du, dys., and Duffmeister,

Since it's 7:fideen CDST, and we're picking scrubs outside the top 100, should we push the deadline a little to give everyone a chance to get a pick in?

There gonna be teeing off soon, and a lot of Hos haven't seen this, or picked yet.  'Sides 80% of these clowns ain't gonna see Saturday.

PS.  Thanks for the contest.   [sm_beertoast]

If I am allowed in:

If it's first come first served on picking the players then spanky has to pick someone else also.

Kinda has to be.  Or we have to have a second tie-breaker as, obviously, the scorecard approach won't differentiate.

I'm easy but we have to do something I think.

*EDIT*

I wouldn't care if they picked someone who is say...up to the fifth hole...this course is gonna tear these guys up.

My thinking is I wouldn't want someone to not play just because they really, really, really wanted to pick Pablo Martin (E thru 4) or even Jason Kokrak (love that name...Clive?) just because he's already tee'd off and 1 over thru 3.

Just a thought.

*EDIT*
Pairings and tee times below, their are still a bunch of players yet to tee off (they go at 12:30 Eastern).

Friday's early scores confirm the USGA is up to their usual tricks.  Red scores just make them burn.

Looking forward to a weekend of watching the best in the world play like I do.   :-X

I've been McDuffed.   ;)

Furyk and Mickelson both +5 through 8.  Cut line advances hourly.  Given the "within 10 strokes" condition we could see it at +10 or higher.  Currently we're looking at +8 and 106 players through and that's assuming Nick Dougherty doesn't bogey the first five holes.  We could have players make the cut and end up +20 or worse for the tournament.  What a *goshdarn* joke.

Being McDuffed is somewhat slightly better than being gvandel454'd if you know what I mean and a whole lot better than being spuzzed since I have felt that second hand from you no less.  :D

It's always a great discussion, these guys should be tested at least once a year.  It's a given for the US Open, you drive the ball straight, you find the right spot on the green, the greens are wicked fast blah, blah, blah winning score is usually right around par, if you're one of the top 175 or so of the best players in the world you better be able to hit a golf ball straight, if you can't, the rough is a virtual penalty, I think it should be, if you hit it in a sand trap it's a virtual penalty and I think it should be.  I don't want the 2nd best major in golf to be decided at 20 under par, I would rather see the winner at plus 4 and the last guy int the field at 20 over par, struggle a little bit like the rest of us do, let's really test your mettle there little Billy Superhighpricedathlete...awwwww Billy come here sunshine, it's ok pat pat pat, next week is the Canon Greater Hitachi US Bank Wyndham Hill Viking Classic at The Dunes where you'll be able to shoot 22 under par.  That my Whiskey Baja friend is a gosh darn joke.

What's being tested?

1.  Can you hit the fairway?

2.  Can you get lucky and hold the green with your approach?

3.  Can you get lucky and hit the hole instead of running off the other side of the green?

There's no test from the rough.  It's simply impossible.  Where's the separating the men from the boys aspect?  Everyone's a boy.

Bunkers on the American tours are never a test.  The sand is perfect, the lies are perfect and the players are really good.  This tournament makes them a test because it's so difficult to keep the bunker shot on the green.  That's about the greens though; not the bunkers.

The greens are stupid.  Maybe 10% of the green gives you a shot at birdie.  Maybe 40% gives you a shot at par.  Those percentages are SWAGs but you get my drift.  Where's the test on some of these positions?  Hit the hole if you're very good or very lucky.  Miss and look at a three putt or higher.  Even the best in world can't put the ball on the right 10% of the green on purpose - at least not often.

I get the arguments going the other way.  I just disagree with them.  The USGA are sadists when it comes to their Open.

A major shouldn't be won at -20.  That's not what I'm saying.  I just prefer the way the 1st best major sets up their Championship.  The course is what it is.  Sometimes the weather defends it and sometimes it doesn't.  Sometimes a good bit under par wins it and sometimes small children are blown into a bunker and drowned.

3.  Can you get lucky and hit the hole instead of running off the other side of the green?
I take a fairly simple view: good shots should be rewarded, bad shots penalized, mediocre shots neither.  Par should be a good score, but not a spectacular score.  Birdies should be great scores, not routine and not impossible.

I think the players should be tested for accuracy off the tee, not just length.  Pounding a driver and having a shot into the green shouldn't be a birthright.  But that doesn't mean the driver should be taken out of their hands.  Hit good drives, be rewarded; hit bad drives, be punished.

I believe good iron play should be rewarded.  Both distance control and lateral accuracy.  As the hole length shortens, the players will have shorter approaches into greens.  I don't mind having smaller target landing areas to hold the green or give the most advantageous putt.  But when the hole is long (say, a 500-yard par-4), I think the green should be a little more receptive to an incoming 5-iron.  Good course designers take this into account, and the US Open is very nearly always played on well-designed courses.  Let them play the course as it was intended.

Bunkers should be fairly penal.  There's just something wrong when a player would rather go into a hazard than be in grass.  It's a HAZARD, deal with it.

Thanks.  Those clues help.

It'll take me a while to get to work, so if a posting emergency comes up and you need to convey emphasis or sarcasm, you can always manually invoke bold or italics using the bracket tags. (you probably already know this, but just in case)

{b}this is bold{/b}
{i}this is italics{/i}
replace the curly braces with square brackets.

Also, I've heard that on some keyboards you can get bold text by typing extra hard on the keys and italics by using upward glancing keystrokes.  You can always give that a shot to see if your keyboard supports it.

Ah, I see the problem.  The site at dystopia.com was put together in a half-assed manner and has lots of parts still pointing to golfhos (scripts, stylesheets, etc.).  I assume the scripts blocked from golfhos.com are why this is failing.

Give me a sec, and I'll clean this up, so everything should be from dystopia.com when you're on that site soon.

Teri Rialto: Well, Christmas is a time for traditional foods and bite-size treats, and we have a very special guest today.
Margeret Jo McCullen: That's right, Teri. He's the owner of his own holiday bakery, with a very, very clever name - Season's Eatings.
Teri Rialto: [ laughs ] That's really funny!
Margeret Jo McCullen: I know, it rhymes with Season's Greetings!
Teri Rialto: Please welcome the owner of Season's Eatings - Pete Schweddy.
[ Pete pulls up to his mike ]
Margeret Jo McCullen: Well, Pete, Teri and I have been looking forward to having you on the show, 'cause we know you're the master of all kinds of Christmas goodies. Tell us about them.
Pete Schweddy: Well, there are lots of great treats this time of year - Zucchini Bread, Fruitcake.. but the thing that I most like to bring out this time of year are my Balls.
Teri Rialto: Mmm.. Balls.. Tell us about your Balls, Pete.
Pete Schweddy: Well, over at Season's Eatings, we have Balls for every taste. Popcorn Balls, Cheese Balls, Rum Balls.. you name it.
Margeret Jo McCullen: Wow! My mouth's watering just thinking about those Balls!
Teri Rialto: It's been years since I've seen any Balls.
Pete Schweddy: Would you like to see my Balls now?
Margeret Jo McCullen: Yeah. Whip them out.
[ Pete places a tray of Balls on the control board ]
Teri Rialto: Mmm.. wow.. you have some beautiful Balls..
Margeret Jo McCullen: They're bigger than I expected.
Pete Schweddy: A lot of people tell me that.
Margeret Jo McCullen: Look at that, Teri - the way they glisten.
Pete Schweddy: That's because make sure that each one of my Balls gets plenty of oil.
Margeret Jo McCullen: I can't help but, notice, Pete - your Balls are a little misshapen.
Pete Schweddy: That's because I rested them on a hot stove too long.
Teri Rialto: Can I touch your Balls.
Pete Schweddy: Go ahead. But be careful, they're very delicate.
Margeret Jo McCullen: Wow. I can't wait to get my mouth around his Balls.
Teri Rialto: [ sniffing ] Ooh.. I like the way your Balls smell..
Pete Schweddy: Do whatever you want to, ladies. My Balls are here for your pleasure.
Margeret Jo McCullen: [ chewing ] Wow, Pete.. I have to say - your Balls are so tender..
Pete Schweddy: Well, there's no beating my Balls. They're made from a secret Schweddy Family recipe. No one can resist my Schweddy Balls.
Margeret Jo McCullen: Wow.. Schweddy Balls. Nothing like a Schweddy Ball.
Teri Rialto: Good Balls.
Margeret Jo McCullen: Mmm.. good times.
Teri Rialto: Good times.. Mmm.. our producer is telling us it's time to wrap it up.
Margeret Jo McCullen: That's all the time we have today, Teri. So, join us next week, when our topic will be that other holiday favorite..
Margaret Jo & Teri - ..Fragrant, Flavored Nuts.
Pete Schweddy: A quick plug! If you order from Season's Eatings now, you can still send out a special Schweddy Ball Sack in time.
Margeret Jo McCullen: Great idea. My niece would love a Sack of Schweddy Balls...

Why I'd love to Clive, thank you for asking.

They are perfectly round balls, although a tad dimpled, they just came that way I guess.  My balls were in a sack that my wife had buried in some forgotten place long ago, I just recently found them again, the sack that held my balls was dusty, but my balls were fine.  They are good balls, my balls are in great condition, sometimes I just like to hold my balls, but, that's just me, my balls are soft, my balls like to go "both ways" if you know what I mean  ;).  My balls have been stamped...no, no, no it's not what you're thinking, my balls have not been stepped on, they have been lettered, yes that is correct, someone wrote on my balls, I don't mind though, it kind of adds to the charm of my balls, the say "T-I-T" something or other, my goodness that's funny come to think of it, my balls have t-i-t on them, and also "Professional 90"...Wow! my head is spinning...my balls are pro t-i-t-s.

They are not very big balls though, if you want really big balls you'll have to contact my friend:

Funny story...he once told me..."some balls are held for charity and some balls are held for fancy dress, but when they're held for pleasure they're the balls that I like best".

So...ummmmm...let me know if you want my balls, I could take a picture of them if you'd like.

Errrrrrrrrrrrrr...glad someone does? Give me a day or two and they shall be en route.

Tough to read.  According to this, it could be with, or without.

I'm headed into.... European  Night at a local pub.  But I'm not riding........  I planned instead to drive.....   I'll be...... into full leathers for the outing.........

Good for him.  Big step.
