Title: Chivalry is dead
Post by: Uisce Beatha on July 17, 2008, 07:37:21 PM
Do you offer your seat to another on the train/bus if...?

1)  You're a young man and the other person is a woman of any age.
2)  You're a young man and the other person is a old man.
3)  You're an older man and the other person is a woman of any age.
4)  You're an older man and the other person is a young woman.
5)  You're a man/woman/young/old/whatever and the other person has an obvious physical ailment which makes standing difficult.

I'm somewhere between 4/5 and 5/5 (#4 would depend on a number of factors) but judging by what I see on the train every day the average is somewhere under 1/5.  :sad3:

1) Yes, back in the day.
2) Yes, back in the day.
3) Yes.
4) No, absent extenuating circumstances.
5) Yes.

The follow-up question, out of curiosity: what do you do if you offer the seat and your mark demurs?  Did you get up first?  If not, what about the other standing folks?

Looking at your list, 4/5 should be about right.

#3 depends (similar to #4). 92 year old man and 51 year old woman I'm going to give the nod to the old dude. Assuming said woman is in relatively good health.

#1, #2 should be no-brainer yes.

#5 is a special case. If I were to see people not give up their seat it would more than likely prompt me to insert myself into the situation.

I stand. Or give up my seat regardless.

 :sad3: For people that don't.  *fudge*in' lazy 'merkans. [sm_cussing]

I don't ride the train. I feel it's beneath me. That and it doesn't go anywhere I do.

I'm bored. And the board is slow.

We don't have any of that type of mass transit here.  We have a  :airquotes: light rail train  :airquotes: but it only goes downtown and we never go downtown.  It doesn't go to Fuzzy's house either so.............

When I was in the Army, I was stationed in D.C.  We rode The Metro everywhere.  We (I mainly) were strong muscular handsome young men.  We thought it was cool to stand while we rode and forfeit empty seats to the elderly, women and kids.  And tourists.  We thought it was cool.  [/validation]

It still is.

I wish the train did go to Fuzzy's house.

Ditto on every scenario.  If she is hot enough I'd get on all fours and make like a bench for her.

Why? She could just sit in your lap. I know I would let her sit in my lap. So long as Darla isn't around.

Good point.  I suppose I was assumed to already by standing.

And people question my bulb wattage.

You're just mad because you didn't think of it.

Some how putting it in print doesn't help you! Like stroh says your bulb is dimming. Oh wait, your wattage hasn't been that bright!  ;D

for me , excluding #5, they all range on conditional from depends to most of the time. 5 is an always.  i'd say on average i'm about 3.5

Today I gave up my seat to a woman in her early thirties.  One stop later she gave the seat up to a 20-something dude with a broken foot.

Pay it forward.   :)

(In all honesty, WTF does that phrase mean?)
