Title: What I do wrong?
Post by: Spanky on October 20, 2007, 11:44:34 AM
Just installed Ubuntu on the desktop, installed it on the second HD. So it boots up fine but when I select Windows in GRUB it goes to the HP recovery screen. It's acting like Windows got corrupted or the boot loader is gone or something.

(other problem I had was I had a pre-release version of Vista installed also that expired but when I booted up before it wanted Vista. I had to select older version windows then XP would boot. I was hoping GRUB would allow me to remove Vista altogether)

It sounds like the entry for Windows in your /boot/grub/menu.lst is pointing to the HP Recovery partition.

In the grub menu options, is there only one option for Windows (nothing for Vista/XP or anything else on that drive?)

Maybe this link will help?

Feck! I wish I saw that earlier! I ended up doing a recovery and now I am spending the next week to get back to where we were.  [sm_oops]

I am half tempted at this point to install Vista for winblows and start over with linux. First I have to back up what i backed up. The restore got rid of GRUB so now I can't boot to Linux.

This is one of those times I hate Windows. [sm_banghead] [sm_banghead] [sm_banghead] [sm_banghead] [sm_banghead] [sm_banghead] [sm_banghead]

yup, you gotta install in the right order and it's generally better if there's only 1 partition to start with.
