As the subprime fallout grows, the idea of a public bailout isn't sounding as far-fetched as it once did.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal last month, Senator Hillary Clinton, a candidate for the U.S. Democratic presidential nomination, said the U.S. government should be ready to buy troubled mortgages from investors and avoid a prolonged slowdown.

Like you, I'm not in favor of using government funds to bailout investors or homeowners, will we really be paying for it?  Will taxes be raised to cover this?  I doubt it.

We've made a conscious decision not to be house rich and cash poor.  I have very little sympathy for those that bought more house than they can afford.

well, better than the purely  "privatize the profits, socialize the losses." ethos we've had over the last 8 years

Ditto.

Any bail out rewards bad behavior (*both sides of the table - I've made my opinion known before). I'll reserve judgement on Hillary's comment until I see her plan. I do wish people who actually do things the way they should could get a tax credit for having a mortgage they can afford and being  fiscally intelligent (i.e. savings, retirement, etc.). A reverse bail out if you will.  :)

Maybe if good behavior was rewarded once in a while??

But there are so many victims ...

We're all going to be paying for it not in taxes, but in the price of everything that financing touches.  Personal or commercial.
