Title: steelers draft = officially garbage.
Post by: Aske on April 29, 2007, 10:28:29 AM
no OL solution other than drafting a project TE who can at best add to a double TE set and catch high passes over the middle for 5-10 yards

taking an OLB prospect who is 2-3 years away in the 1st round

letting the best non 1st round CB/S slide into the hands of your rival/enemy  when you need 2ndary help

They took an OL from Rutgers who has a decent scouting report.

I agree with the tight end pick in round three.  Can't figure that one out.

The punter has some nice stats.  I know, it's just a punter, but we do need one.

The DL from Ok.State didn't look all bad either.

The draft lacks anyhting to get excited about now, but I'm not writing it off as a disaster yet.  Though I''ll admit the Lawrence Timmons pick has me worried.  I keep thinking "Huey Richardson" and "Alonzo Jackson".

yeh, they did that OL pick right after I posted this. still, most (aside from freaks like larry allen) 5th/6th round  OL are either cut, or long range prospects.  if they wanted a long range prospect, they should have taken the tackle from wyoming.     passing on spencer in the 1st round if they wanted a DE/OLB  for the eventual 4/3 ... who could play now.   taking gay , who is scouted abysmally ... why?  he won't even make the practice squad.  they let marvin white go to cincy, and he could play every DB position on the field except covering the #1 receiver or a true burner.   worst of all, he will knock at least 1 steeler out during a game this year.  guaranteed.  [sm_disgust]

looking back at last year, the holes were in the OL and 2ndary and DE.  and they lost hartings.  okobi in at center, Faneca at LG,   tolerable. starks might be ok if he actually progresses.  smith and simmons are pathetic disgraces and will get ben killed.  ike taylor can probably be helped by tomlin, and mcfadden is playing great. polamalu will be all pro if if he recovers fully on his shoulder/knee, but the other safety is a huge liability in coverage and run support.  carter is the only servicable nickel back.     -- i just don't see much improvment ...  sure, if a few more bounces go their way than last year,  they should probably win 10-11 games.  but that will probably be 3rd place in their division.  baltimore and cincinatti definitely drafted far batter ... for next season
