So you're the one who couldn't.

The Whig Party surrenders!

No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manner of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

I think you're shortchanging the guy.

He was constantly at odds with his parties leadership in the halcyon days of 2003-4-5-6 when he was chair of the Senate judiciary committee. His primary sin was that he actually let Democrats on the committee ask questions of His Highness's judicial appointees.

There have been other set to's as well. He was one of the Gang Of 16 that prevented the Senate from exercising the Nuclear option, which turned out to be smart politics, because nowadays the Repubicans filibuster everything in sight.

Add in that he's a pro choice, and there was no way in hell he was going to reelected to anything as a Republican, now that the GOP has become the party of mouthbreathing bookburners.
