Title: Enthusiasm For Golf [DOWNER]
Post by: Clive on May 16, 2008, 09:13:20 AM
LowPro has an annual two-day tournament as a fundraiser for the local SPCA.  Lots of FGIers show up for it -- call it the East Coast Desert Storm.  I played in the pre-event round at Verdict Ridge yesterday, riding with superT as rangerx and coachsb rounded out the foursome.  First round since the two at Bandon the first week of December 2007.  So yeah, my game was polished.

The other guys were nice, it was good to catch up with them and to get to know superT(errance) better ... but the desire to play golf still just isn't there.  :sad3:  Once again, I was actively checking what number hole we were on by about #13 to see how many more holes I had to play before it'd be over.  I actually emailed my wife during the drive from 14 green to 15 tee: "Still no real interest in playing golf."

Back in law school and beyond, I routinely went out as a single.  As I am NOT a people-person, it was pretty much about the golf.  Loved to play, loved to go to the range and just see what I could do with a club.  These days, though, it's all about the people -- I can't see myself EVER going out just to play golf.  I'd thought it was just burnout (from what, I don't know), but it's been a good three years now and nothing's changed.

Where did it all go?

I haven't swung a golf club since August, and I increasingly find myself not really caring.  :sad3:

You are both *fudge*ed in the head.

I'm addicted to golf more than pot.   [sm_shock]

Things change.  You develop other interests.  You have kids.  You evolve.

I use to autocross back before we had kids.  My wife did, too.  We had a Formula Vee we'd haul around the Midwest to compete in different events.  All the while I did this, I really wanted to go road racing (SCCA), but really couldn't afford it.  I finally got my wife's okay to do this, but my job situation changed so I put it on hold.  Then we had kids.  I lost my interest in road racing, sold the autocross car and took up golf.  I have no desire to race anymore, I rarely even watch racing on TV.

As long as you don't replace golf with being a couch potato, it's good.

BTW, if you're bored by the thirteenth hole, try playing nine.  I do that a lot more than I used to.

It's been 15 months since my last round. :-\

I used to go to the range 3-4 times a week and wake up before dawn to be the first one out on the course and get in a fast round solo.  I bet I spent even more time in the garage building clubs or practicing with training aids.

Just doesn't seem fun anymore. :sad3:

A: I know exactly what you're going through.  As I have gone through it my self, and am only recently coming out of it.  Even living on a golf course did not spur my enthusiasm.  I have played less living here than ever in my life.

Some of it was time and money.  Some of it was lack of improvement in my game.  Some it was just hell, like you, who knows.  Just no interest in going out there.

One of the things that sets me apart from you guys is I abhor playing alone, basically refuse to do it.

I'm now starting to get the desire back.  In fact, I took today off to go out and play.  I'm playing better, and enjoying the game.

B:  Pick better people to play with.  Jeebus *fudge*!  I guarantee you'd be focused on golf instead of just having to endure sitting and listening to me for 4 hours.  I'd get you back on track.  Count on it.

I have to rank this as one of the top posts on here.

That said I am just now getting the desire to play back in also. A few years ago it was about the equipment but I still wasn't playing. I never lost the desire, just the time and money. For me now it's more just getting out and enjoying the game versus what I shoot. Most of the time I don't even keep score anymore. I usually start to but if I know I am not doing well I just stop and think more about where I am and more importantly what I am not doing instead of playing golf.

That's why I think the Bandon trip will be a blast. I wont care what I shoot. I will just enjoy the company and the beauty of the course rather then my play.

I'm part of the fundraising board at work and am on the committee to coordinate our annual golf tournament. I was informed today that I will be joining some of the other members of the committee on Thursday for a round at the potential site for this years tourney, a fairly exclusive private course (Hidden Valley CC). I seriously haven't set foot on a golf course in 9 months. I fully expect I will be embarrassing myself.

If that's not the way to restore my enthusiasm, I don't know what is.

Cliff, I've had the same feeling on more than one occasion.  It'll pass, and if it doesn't, remember this:

"He enjoys that perfect peace, that peace beyond all understanding, which comes to its maximum only to the man who has given up golf."

You dudes totally suck.

I just got back from the range with a thrown back.  Pulled a muscle in my lower back while hitting a 5 iron and its really got me moving slowly and uncomfortably right now.  It may have me out for a few weeks - and I'm damn pissy that I may not be able to play for that long.  This is the best time of the year to be golfing and I just farqed up my back - shazbot!

You wet blankets can swallow my knob too!  [sm_devil]

Wish I could have given Clive more *feces* - that he clearly deserves - but he was only there for that one round.  I must be one of the reasons he lacks golf enthusiasm  :(

I was sort of feeling the same way but not exactly.  The fact that I was not deriving the typical 'joy' I feel from golf was troubling.

I made the self-diagnosis that I was suffering from Non-Ideal Driver Syndrome.  I'd be lying to claim that this was a singular act of brilliance, since it was mostly a move of desperation.

So I went on a quest to find the perfect driver.  My quest began with a repeated series of scientifically conducted multiparametric launch monitor sessions followed by live, "on-course" field trials.  I tried just about every offering available from each of the major oem's.

The quest ended with the almost entirely impulsive purchase of a virtually untested 10.5 degree Ping Rapture with a 'stiff' Aldila "Blew By U" shaft, that in the words of Mrs. Blader, "match" my eye color perfectly, and a promise from the store that they would take it back for full credit if it sucked as bad as everything else I had tried to that point.

OMG!!! Does it work!!!!  It is better than pröñ!!!!  The ball goes so far and stupid straight, I need to have eye surgery again just so I can pick up objects 300 yds and beyond!

I get testicular surge just writing about it.  In fact, I get such a severe case of testicular surge each time I "strap on" the bag stuffed with my Ping Rapture and head on down the fairway, that I can finally understand why the Scots always played in baggy skirts.

Don't give up brother, I played like *feces* last time out too. But I suck so the 40 I shot was probably a fluke.

Who cares as long as it is still fun.

I think that's the key, if you are working at it and not enjoying the game then it's not worth it. I have learned to just enjoy the game. I make sucky shots and some good ones. I enjoy the good ones and just brush off the bad ones.

Shot a 47 - 49 today with 32 putts and 1 birdie. But I was hitting some very nice drives, a couple of really good sand shots and pitches. Full irons sucked Spacey's balls but what are you going to do.

I've been struggling all year long. From snap hooks to chili dip wedges, shanks, and lousy putts, my game is crappola. It is only the occasional long drive or good hybrid shot that keeps me coming back. I'm seriously considering going to 6, 7 and 8 hybrids, as these are the only clubs I can hit on a semi-regular basis.
I am still enthused, eonugh, but I don't know for how long. :sad3:

I've been struggling all year long. From snap hooks to chili dip wedges, shanks, and lousy putts, my game is crappola. It is only the occasional long drive or good hybrid shot that keeps me coming back. I'm seriously considering going to 6, 7 and 8 hybrids, as these are the only clubs I can hit on a semi-regular basis.
I am still enthused, eonugh, but I don't know for how long. :sad3:

Gee there are some big sooks around here. ::) ::) ::)

Sooks, my ass. her I am, pouring my heart out, and exposing my soul, and it's SOOKS. Not much compassion around here. :(:(  :)

It's pretty simple really.  With Tiger out on sabbatical, we all had our chance to step up our game and take the spotlight.  We all failed miserably.  Reminded of our mortality.  And that we suck at golf.

Actually my (recent round) post wasn't meant as complaining or whining.  I was pretty happy with my score over the conditions, even with the big blow up hole.

I've been hitting the ball pretty decent this year.*
