Title: Sprained ankle- Now with Pics
Post by: spacey on November 18, 2007, 09:29:37 AM
Slipped while coming down a ladder yesterday, landed funny, hurt my left ankle. Today, it is swollen, all sorts of pretty colors, and according to the ER nurse of the house has obvious ligament damage. My big toe is also purple and about half again as big as normal.

I guess my plans for today have been modified to include immobilization, elevation, ibuprofen, and ice.  :sad3:

Ouch.  :sad3:

Ditto on the Black Butte.

Is it your starter leg (or do you have electric start?).

Electric start, but it is my shifting leg, and I don't currently have enough upward motion to comfortably shift with my toe. I have a heel shifter, so that would be the obvious solution except that I don't think I can support enough weight on it to get the bike off the kick stand or support it at a stoplight.  :sad3:

If I can get you to say it was all due to hanging lights I might be able to talk my wife out of them.

Probably not, but maybe.

Get well soon.

Dear Mrs. Beatha-

Please view above the damage that can be caused by uncoordinated people on ladders. Having seen your husband's golf swing, I suggest you might want to reevaluate placing him in such a precarious position as it might just do more harm than good. I'd advise any Christmas lights that you desire be placed at ground level. Please consider it. Thanks in advance.

Uisce on a ladder still only gets to about normal-folk waist height.

Dood.   Get that looked at.

That amount of swelling and discoloration is not good.

Seriously.

[sm_shock] I don't want to imagine the pain of that one.  I cringe at the pictures.

The experts I've spoken to (largely professional acquaintances who would know, but also my wife who believes she knows everything) believe that with the range of motion I maintain and the type of pain I'm experiencing and when I'm experiencing it, there's likely no fracture. The advice I've been given is to keep it elevated, iced, etc. as much as possible for the next few days. If within the next 72-96 hours I don't start seeing some amount of improvement, or worse see a decline, then go get it looked at. I've also been informed that if I have ligament or tendon damage that requires surgical attention, there's no substantive penalty for later intervention.

Basically I've been told to not overreact, and to rub dirt on it and walk it off.

Update: Swelling has gone down significantly. Much wider range of motion in both the ankle and the big toe. Pain is a bit better, but I still can't put too much weight on it. The hematoma has spread, but isn't as hard to the touch and is a much more pleasant color today.

A. Did you go to work today, or are you milkin' this *feces*?

B. Are the Christmas lights up?  Half up?  How's that *feces* gonna get finished?

A. Yes I worked today, but I still milked the *feces*.

B. *fudge* Christmas lights, never put 'em up, never will. I was cleaning out rain gutters.

the lesson to be learned here is don't clean rain gutters.

No I think it was to put screens on your gutters so they don't have to be cleaned.
