Now it asks for the reason, you think they are deserving. ;D

Do you guys get to see "the reason"? [sm_devil]

I installed a mod to the forum dealing with karma last night, so now it asks for a description.  It has all these crazy settings such as allowing people to get PMs (er, private messages, not PMS) when they receive karma or allowing the recipient to see the reason and who gave them karma, but I turned off all that.  I don't believe anyone but an admin account can see the reason it was given, but let me know if that's not the case.

I have mixed feelings about the karma feature.  I think it's useful, but it can be easily manipulated right now by two people colluding, and then it's not useful to anyone.

Some of the ideas running through my head to improve the karma feature are:
1) checking IP address when giving karma (to prevent someone from creating multiple accounts to boost their karma)

2) only allowing one karma vote from one person to another.  So Member X can only give one karma vote to Member Y, to prevent Member X from stacking hundreds of applauses onto Member Y.  A smite vote would then negate the applause vote.  This might be problematic, though.

3) I've been toying with a funny idea about karma abuse.  Maybe put in a check if someone is abusing the karma feature and going to town with it haphazardly, it would start subtracting from their own karma.

It's kind of a work in progress.  A lot of sites don't seem to use it, and I can understand why.  They manage to pull it off over at golfdiscussions.com though with their MooJo.
