Title: Possibly premature...
Post by: Uisce Beatha on August 16, 2009, 03:49:00 PM
But probably not.

Is Y.E. Yang as a major winner good for golf or not?  Clearly good for Asian golf but that's pretty much the only spot on the globe where golf is in ascension right now anyway.  What about the rest of the world.

Undecided myself.  No names that golf fans have heard about are one thing.  No names that no one has heard of... maybe not so much.

The year of the crowd un-favorites.

LOL, my "probably not" statement made before Yang yipped.   ;)

I GUARANTEE you the boys and girls of Hazeltine have an opinion.  ;)

Beem by 1 over Tiger in '02 and now Yang over Tiger. At least they have Payne Stewart from 1991.

On topic: I agree with your Asia assessment. Asia didn't need a win to make golf more popular there as it almost can't be bigger than it is now.

I think it's good for golf in that Tiger has been taken down in the last round(s) of a major. He's clearly going to have to work to get 5 more to beat Nicklaus. The challengers know that it can be done and Eldrick is going to re-dedicate himself after going major-less this year.

Should be fun.

It's premature to speculate on whether or not Yang's victory was good or bad for golf, but all signs point to "good for golf" so far.
